route to the RGV from Canada thru Dakotas

We are heading off to the RGV in two weeks and can't decide whether to take Hwy #83 or Hwy #I-29 & I-35. For anyone who has gone there before, what do you suggest and why? The mileage difference is only 72 miles according to streets & trips. Any suggestions for overnight spots would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for your help.

If you get near Lemars Iowa, stop by the Ice Cream Capital of the world visitors center and have a Blue Bunny treat. Give me a shout if you have time to stop and I will meet you there. Cant really help you out with a place to stay as most of the campgrounds have everything turned off for the winter in this area.

I think I would get on the fastest route south out of the cold between snow storms just have to see which if the fastest and watch the weather for a clean shot. I am not sure with traveling that I would plan on using any water maybe the hotel/motel for the first few nights or least till you get to warmer weather. "Iron Butt" it till you find the first campround open. Either way like your parents always said when you were going out to drive, "be carefull and watch out for icey roads".......

Thanks Ron, after all who wouldn't like visiting an Ice Cream Capitol. I can see you are less than 30 miles off I-29.

Tom Gina 06, we will be watching the weather closely for that clean shot south. We intend to hotel it for the 1st couple of nights for sure. I know a couple from Minnedosa that were to leave today (winter storm happening), anyway they love the #83 south route and after 2 days they get to Scott City, Kansas and flush their antifreeze out while camping there.

I run I-29 all the time in both North Dakota and South Dakota, overall it is a pretty good road. It does get a tad bumpy between Sioux Falls and Sioux City. There are a couple of Flying J's and other places that have good access for fuel. No matter which way you go, trave safe as you make the journey southward!
