Michelin's

The Sheriff came in today asking me to drive his car and see what was wrong. I made it ten feet and knew a tire had a shifted belt. After dropping him off at the office, I lifted it on the hoist and found not one, but three tires with shifted belts. Michelin "Energy". 45,000 miles and still had good tread, but I was less than impressed with the sidewall integrity. I expected more from a premium tire. Not wanting to mess up the soft ride, he got a new set of four of the same. I'm chalking it up to the pot-holes around here.

Kevin, given the nature of the Sheriff business, there are many things that could have caused the problems you saw with these tires. Fast accelerations, fast cornering, fast stops, road hazards, off road hazards........etc. The Michelin Energy MXV4 may not be the best tire for this application. What make and model is the vehicle, and what size are the tires?

If anyone is familiar with my prior Michelin tire story, I think that's what mind did. If you are curious, do a search and I even had a picture where the tire was torqued into what looked like agonized tire tread. I believe "shifted belts" might be a better description. This only happened to one of the tires on my truck and I don't abuse my truck that I know of. The tire was an LTX MS/2 which is a pretty heavy duty tire but it sure did fail pretty bad and made the truck bounce around pretty good but I was traveling at 70 mph on a local interstate. It did not blow out, it just wasn't so round any more and this is what caused the rough drive. Having three tires doing this must have been an awful ride.

The one tire was changed out under warranty, but still cost less than $100 to replace (new tire warranty, etc.) I do not know what the final story was, but America's Tire changed it out as soon as I told them and brought it in. No problems since.

Lonnie, it's a 2010 Lucerne-not equipped for pursuit or running calls.

Well, scratch that thought. Did they replace them under warranty?

Well I just put 4 Michelin Defenders on the wife's CRV. First Michelin's I have bought in 30 years. First 100 miles are good so far.

The Michelin Defender is an excellent tire. Eventually it will replace the Primacy and the Energy. It should serve you well, and for around 90,000 miles, Jim.
