adding shelf behind sofa

My wife has decided that a shelf for displaying pictures of the grandkids would look great behind the sofa in our 3400. Has anyone added a shelf to their Montys and if so, how did you attach it to the walls? Will normal anchors and screws work in the walls of the Montys or will the paneling not hold the screws?

The walls will hold suprisingly more than you think, but its still just a 1/8" laminated wood anchor point. Common sense says if you don't add too much weight on the shelf they will do fine.

Depends on whether you want to do it or not. If you want to do it, just be careful with the weight. If you don't want to do it, tell her it's not safe, the walls won't hold it.

Your choice. Oopps! Does DW read the forum.

How about making a free-standing shelf. Make it with legs and feet that will fit behind and under the sofa. Kind of like (just like) the little tables that sit over the front of the sofa. No attachment to the Monty and removable/reusable when or if you should happen to change trailers. Bob

Maybe anchoring it to the sofa frame might be wiser.

Send a PM or email to SteveR, he did that on their prior unit, he can tell you all about it.

He might be off line for a while, grandkids, graduations, birthdays, etc.

He WILL get back to you.

I like Bob's idea plus add a couple of fasteners to the wall to keep the unit in place. This way the floor takes all the weight and the wall fasteners keep it in place.

Great Idea Muddflapp, I think I may try that with the BS if we ever get it back from the shop. Our big drawer kept sliding out and breaking the glides so I made large wedges for the drawer front and I put those big sliders under the feet of the couch so I can vacuum back there. I can slide it out and set a freestanding shelf behind it for books, thanks again for the idea... Dave and Betsy
