Amarillo by pass
We will be heading West on I 40 to NM and hate the thought of going thru Amarillo, TX. Know there is a loop around the city. Would it be better to use the North loop or South loop around it? Want to avoid as much heavy traffic as we can. Thanks.

Depends on where you are going in New Mexico. If I were going straight west (Tucumcari, Santa Rosa, etc.) I would go straight through on I-40. I have never had any problem doing that; traffic usually moves without undue difficulty.
On the other hand if I were going Northwest (Clayton, Raton), the NORTH loop is ideal. Because I usually go this way this is my usual practice.
I have never used the South loop all the way, though I did use a portion of it when going down to Palo Duro Canyon.

We are staying in Amarillo indefinately. I-40 West is down to 2 lanes due to road construction. All lanes are suppose to be open sometime next week. It is pretty congested during the day.
Have a good trip.

We came straight through Amarillo a few weeks ago w/no problem. Enjoy your trip. We enjoyed the Santa Fe-Sedona area.

I am in Amarillo right now, praying the storms miss us. I came thru the city at 4:45PM and yes traffic was down to two lanes for a mile or so and 1 lane for about 1/2 mile with stop and go traffic. This was west bound. A little inconvient but not enought to get too worried about as lanes were plenty wide. All in all a vey minor inconvience. BTW we at at Ft Amarillo RV park and it is one of the best I have ever seen. tons of features including limo service to big texan steak house. there are 9 Montanas in the park. Happy Trails we are on our way to NM, AZ, NE, Colo and then home to AR
