Valve stem diameter

Just got new Goodrich tires for the rig, asked for steel valve stems, and they used rubber. Before he started work, the tech said he wasn't sure he had a steel stem with a large enough diameter. Obviously not.

Does somebody know the hole size in the steel rims?

Bob,
I'd think that the hole size would be standardized but I'm not a wheel and tire person. One of our experts should be by soon to lay down the info you asked about.

Sounds like the tire person simply did not know or was out of what you wanted. I don't think steel stems are all that rare.

You must be ready to get out of the white stuff. I hope the wx holds up for the Q gathering.

See you on down the road.

Dennis, the last few days have been in the 50's, although they started out pretty gray. I got the suspension lubed and checked. U-bolts only required a little tightening on a couple of nuts. I'm going to repack the outer bearings while I've got the wheels off. I think I'll bring the bearing fixture along if anyone wants to do their bearings.

I've got a lot of toys to bring with me this time, including a dc current adapter (1000A) for my multimeter.

I'm going to load up with AGM batteries, too, along with cables and Anderson PowerPoles. If people are interested in the circle, great, otherwise, I'll take them down to the Ham swap meet. I picked up a 1400VA UPS, for free, today. Replaced the batteries with the 17A gel cells and it works fine. That place the WorkerB found is a gold mine.

You need any replacement batteries for your UPSs or ham gear?

Bob,
Good to hear that the wx is fairly nice up your direction. About the same down here but no snow. As a matter of fact not even much rain. Looks like it's gonna be another drought year! One of these days we're simply going to run out.

It's been so long since I even looked at any of my radios.... except for the APRS thing... that I don't know what I need. Sounds like you found a good place.

We're getting anxious to get to Q. The trip to San Jose for the Christmas celebration at my daughter's place worked out great. Got to visit a little bit with Grant and Kathy since they were just a couple of spaces from us.

I think I'll switch over to the Anderson stuff. I originally simply had everything set up for the standard 12 volt outlet. But think it may be time to make the switch.

We'll see you soon in Q. Have a safe journey.

here is a website that has a lot of info and parts http://patchboy.com/Merchant2/mercha...T&Store_Code=P

most car and small truck rims have the smaller diameter hole. But many of the valve stems come with both rubber grommets.

I see two rim hole sizes mentioned, .453 and .625. The .625, it says, is used in "older" rims. I guess I'd better get out there when the temperature warms up a bit to see if I can narrow my choices down.

Thanks, Kevin,

Bob

Bob, the steel wheels on your rig should have the .453 valve stem holes. Even if they are .625, as swanny said, most of the metal clamp in stems come with both sizes of the rubber grommet.

Lonnie is correct I learned this the last time I replaced the tires. You might have to tell the tire guy to use the rubber grommet he has been trashing. I also learned that the stems come in a stubby size and I had to get longer ones to be able to air up the tires.
