Another Tire Question(s) - long post

Was at a trailer shop on Saturday, picking up wet bolts and bushings for my 2006 3000RK. Nice shop, full service for heavy duty commercial trailers as well as other lighter duty stuff. And they are a Dexter approved retailer.

They had several stacks of tires & rims of various sizes. But as we continue to assess & make repairs from our two blowouts Memorial Day, we have yet to settle on our replacement tires. Here is what I have considered so far:

(1) Carlyle CSL 16, 235-85-16 Load Index 132M, Load Range G
(2) Hankook 235-85-16 Load Index 132M, Load Range G
(3) Heartland 235-85-15 Load Index 129 Load Range G
(4) Taskmaster Provider, Load Range G
(5) Sailuns S367 235-80R-16 Load Index 129 Load Range G

(1) Carlyle is from Discount Tire and can buy the 'certificates' for them, they'll mount/balance/etc. Some reviews have been less than spectacular
(2) Hankook - reviews are all over the place (again Discount Tire)
(3) Discount Tire 'house' brand - on backorder
(4) New tires (dates are within 6 months) - reviews are generally positive, but not sure about putting them on a 5th wheel
(5) have to order on-line (worried about getting 'old' dated tires), then finding a place to mount...

So, opinions? Experiences? Am worried dealing with Wally World....

My #1 choice would absolutely be the Sailuns. You can order from Simple Tire and you should not need to worry about the date codes. They should be within a few weeks of your order date.

Ordering Sailuns was my last choice. Not hard to find someone to mount them.

Did you mean "last choice" as in you didn't want to order them, or "last choice" as in the choice you made the last time?
If the former, have you had issues with the Sailuns? My first (original) set wore out very prematurely due to a bad axle. The replacements were from the Vietnam plant instead of China. I'm hoping they are as good a tire, but I haven't had them on the road enough to tell yet.

The guys here have had good luck with these. If it was my camper I would see no reason to buy anything else.

I just purchased Sailuns from Simpletire.com and had them shipped to my house. I took them to Discount Tire and they mounted them for me. They will do so because they don't sell the Sailuns. Mounting and balancing cost was around $110.00. Sailuns came with a date stamp of Feb 2023.

RicTrim, just curious, do you know what caused your blowout? Also, looks like you’re going up from E to G rated tires but keeping the same size - IMO a good idea. Ours came from the factory with Sailuns - no complaints after 22 months and about 12K miles.

Don't rule out Hercules tires. I've been running on mine for about 5 years now. At least, check them out before making a final decision.

The blow-outs were a direct result of me ignoring the fact that the tires were too old (date wise). Thought I could get one last trip out of them. Wrong answer! First one was about 10 miles from leaving the campsite. Rear axle drivers side - completely shredded the tire by the time another motorist alerted me of the issue. Put on the spare... The next one blew about 50 miles down the road - in the middle of a 4 lane merge with another 4 lane. DW saw that one blow in the mirror. Limped @ 5-10 mph to rest area (3 mi) where I dropped the 5th, and went to a local Tractor Supply (Memorial Day afternoon) and bought 2 tires on rims. Got back home. 2 hr drive became 6 hr... Not the most fun day.

Have now purchased a TPMS system (Tireminder) and getting new tires. Also replacing the original spring hardware with wet bolts/bushings. AND, trying to find new fender skirts for the 2006...

Hercules H901 series 14 ply tires are top of the line.. belongs on your short list of ST 14 ply tires.. above Provider series

S637 series are what I currently run but would buy either Hercules or Carlisle if the price was better on either ..

Pulled the trigger on Sailuns from Simple Tire. Should be here in a couple days - have a Discount Tire that I use often - will get them mounted there. Thanks to all who provided an opinion or guidance.

Will advise on how this goes....

That is not a heavy trailer compared to the 39-41 footers of the Montanas today. I had a 2007 3075RL only slightly heavier empty weight than yours. I ran Michelin XPS Rib LT235/85R16E tires for 13 years (one set 9 years and second 4 years when I sold it). They are good for that trailer weight of less than 13,000 GVWR. Even the 9 year old tires still looked new when I replaced them although they only had about 17,000 miles on them. Michelin says inspect yearly at 5 years and replace at 10. Never a flat, never even a low tire. Added 2-4 lbs air at start of each season. A lot of people ran them until the Montanas got too heavy.

Just another option.

I second this. My first 2006 Monty tires gave out in 09 or 10, I think. Put on new Michelin. Ran them until about 2013, when I got another set. Got new trailer in 2014 and actually swapped tires and rims to new Mountaineer. Replaced them after 5 or 6 years which more Michelin. I think I get 45K on them which is about 5-6 years.
Had one problem a few years ago. Got a bolt jabbed into one and TPMS caught it about 1 minute after I pulled onto the interstate. Noticed tires wearing so got new ones and aligned the axles. Kind of pricey tho. My new ones for the truck are $320 a piece I think.

I bought Sailuns from Walmart. Had Discount Tire mount and balance them. I had 2 Hartlands but noticed a bald section in 1 tire. It had caught a nail, slow leak and a belt had shifted.

Lots of hard miles and very happy with the rig..

I went to goodyear G 614 when i first got the trailer.
Never had a failure.. never disappointed..
Never questioned the purchase… yes there are cheaper tires..
Always have bought from americas/discount tire
Proud to purchase american made tires.

Michelin XPS Ribs never gave me a problem, but when they were 7 years old I replaced them. Now they are awfully expensive.

After over 14 years of towing our Fiver with many "other brand" tire failures I ONLY purchase Michelin XPS Ribs or BFG Commercial T/A tire (a pair of each on each axle currently).
I've replaced one Michelin Tire due to more weather checking than I liked at 9 years.
I've lost one Michelin Tire when I lost an ENTIRE wheel on an Interstate - could not find it... And lost one to a nail on the edge of the tire so not repairable.
Otherwise they hold air pressure and don't fail just traveling.
Also make sure you use high quality valve stems.

I would order the sailuns 235x85x16, heavier then the 80's and I just got mine from Walmart, on sale for $143.
