Alaska Question
We're headed to Alaska this year, 2006. Hope to be in the Yukon the last week of May and on into Alaska for June, July and August. One of our desired destinations is Deadhorse. Can we take the Montana up Highway 11 (Dalton Highway)? (Also, implied in this question is "do we want to?".)

You might be able to get the Montana to Deadhorse, but you probably do not want too. The road is large gravel. Most car and RV rentals in Fairbanks do not approve of driving the rental to Deadhorse. Although forest fires prevented us making the trip-- we had planned to leave the Montana in Fairbanks and just drive up to the Arctic Circle. You might consider flying to Barrow from Fairbanks to sea the Arctic Ocean and to experence living on the Arctic Ocean. We really enjoyed to trip to Barrow-- it is worth the cost and time. Alaska Airlines make a morning and evening flight to Barrow each day. We were there on July 4 and it was 32 degrees and the residents were out in shorts and sandals.

No you don't even want to think about it. The oil companies don't like visiters at deadhorse (Northslope). Go Pokes has the right answer, if you want to see the Arctic Ocean, fly on Alaska Air to Barrow is the way to go.

Really appreciate the feedback. We might still make the trip, we just won't tow the 5er. The round trip airfare from Fairbanks to Barrow is $467 each. If we get to see the Artic Ocean, it will probably have to be from Deadhouse.

My impression from our trip to Alaska is that you don't need to get off the main roads with the Montana. There aren't too many sideroads, but if there is one, you don't want to go there. And if Northstar says don't go there, don't go there....in your Montana.

Judy,
Thanks for your reply. Pretty much learning that main roads are about all we'll want to tackle with the Montana but we'll probably do some exploring with just the TV. You were right though, I'm having fun planning! Sorta like a kid at Christmas.
