So what were the advantages to the 3/4 ton SRW short bed again? Oh yeah I forgot it rides softer, except it doesn't with those heavier tires.......Its easier to park? Really? I can park my dually nearly anywhere you can park a standard truck......come on folks there simply isn't any advantage to the smaller trucks now is there!
PLEASE!!! I have had both plus my current 1 ton SRW. Never a mod to carry weight on any. Both DRW and SRW have advantages beyond cost. IMO a DRW is a PIA without considering cost. Great when required but still a PIA.

Maybe the places you live and drive a DRW is no problem. Not around here. Large big box store parking lots are generally not much problem. But smaller stores, doctor/dental offices, smaller shopping centers, even larger shopping malls, many drive thrus, etc simply are not easy even for my CC LB SRW. Many have their parking slots and drives cut down to bare minimum. Duallys fenders barely fit within the white lines in the parking slots leaving a few inches for the next space. Two duallys side by side you probably could not walk between the fenders without turning sideways. If you could get them side by side in the first place. My bank drive thru I fold in the mirrors to make sure they do not hit the guard posts. Can't fold in the outer fenders. Again just a few inches clearance. Many drive thrus have curbed turns entering and/or exiting the order posts. I can just clear the curbs in many cases. A DRW, no.

If the trailer weight dictates a DRW, then that is what a person should get. If a person simply wants a DRW, great, get one. But it the weight does not require it, and a person does not want it, then a DRW is not the choice to make.

If you are speaking strictly about an F250 vs an F350 SRW, then ignore my comments.

It appears we are all close to an agreement on the best truck! Just need a few hundred more posts to hear all sides.

I propose a new forum category. Let's call it the boxing ring. When threads get to this point, it gets transferred to the boxing ring. It would be a place where we can say what we really think without risk of being deemed an unfriendly camper. Of course, what is said in the ring must stay in the ring. Just thinkin.

I have to laugh when somebody starts a statement with "No offence but..." Clearly one fully intended to offend. Why else would they even say what comes next?

Sorry , Late to the Thread

I started paying more attention to weight details after a scary experience on the UP of Michigan. My tow vehicle drivers rear wheel came of while driving. Landed safely without incident. Long story short- I rechecked the weights on my rig:

2011 2500HD Duramax LTZ Crew Cab-

8500 Lbs GW
5990 RAGW (6200 max)
19060 CGW (20500 max)

2014 Montana HC- 10560 with ~2500 Pin Weight

Bottom Line: CGW- ok, RAGW- ok, Max trailer weight- ok, Truck GVWR- overweight (due to pin weight).

I noted that Duramax 2500HDs with the LTZ interior, a 5th wheel hitch (B&W Companion), undercoating, and spray on bedliner all seem to run about 8500 lb GW with 2 occupants, dog, road snacks, etc.

It would appear that I'd be lucky to tow an Ultralite 1500 towable rig with my truck and not exceed the 10000 GVWR rating on the truck.

BTW- the truck tows very well and the ride/ braking is fine.

Am I correct in assuming that a nicely equipped Chevy Duramax 2500HD can't tow much of a 5th wheel?

Not just GMs, pretty much most 250/2500 Series trucks are limited by the 10K GVWR figure.

You need to do one of two things. Get a smaller rv, or get a larger truck..A 2500 or 250 is not enuff truck for a 38 to 40 footer..

Had Duallies since 2004.. i go thru drive thrus and park anywhere a car parks. The fenders are only as wide as the mirrors stick out, no more.

I'm a "newbie" and don't yet have an RV or a Truck. I've been doing tons of research and attended multiple RV shows in the past year. By reading the multiple threads on the forum and absorbing some of the "lessons learned" posted by current RV owners, is like money in the bank for me, as our window for purchasing both will be at the end of this year.

Our personal preference is limiting the length of a rig to less than 36 feet. The amenities of the 3120 model meets my better half's requirements and that's our #1 choice.

As for the truck, test drives and more homework is in store before we choose the manufacturer; it will be diesel powered. Dhardy's post on this thread struck a cord with me, as have other posts about the SRW vs. DRW debate. My initial thought was going the SRW route. But, in view we live on the "Left coast" and will be doing a lot of travel to visit family living on the "Right coast," I've concluded that a DRW crew-cab is the best choice for us. As for the parking lots and narrow drive-through's in some locales, we'll be okay with parking a little further away from the front door and getting a little exercise in the process.

We're looking forward to hitting the road and exploring this great nation! Thanks everyone for the interesting discussion!

You are doing exactly what we did earlier this year.
Lots of research. Determine what rig you really want/need. THEN find the right truck.
We got the 3130re (1st) then F350 crew cab full bed DRW.

For me it comes down to liability. If an accident were to happen I don't want the other lawyer to do the numbers (and they will) to find out I was over weight and flip it to my fault, and then have to deal with the insurance company that may refuse the claim because of being overweight.
