Getting Weighed In
I avoid getting on the scale myself for fear of what I might see, let alone try to weigh a Monty - However
I've got to ask the silly question. Where can I go to do it? I have a port of entry a few miles from here that the truckers are required to use. Is that the place? If so do I just pull in there and ask?
Intimidated and underexposed to wordly things -

Brad,
The following truck stops usually have CAT scales, Flying J, Petro and Loves. If you have one in your area, swing on in and you will be set. If not, I would stop by the commercial scale and ask them if they would let you weigh in? The commercial scale on the way to my seasonal lake spot allowed me to weigh there a few times without charge...

It cost me $8.50 at the CAT scale (Certified Automated Truck). You can get a reweigh for $1. You pull right on the scales and it weighs the steer axle, the drive axle and the trailer axle. you can drop the trailer in the lot and reweigh the truck alone. Ask before you drop the trailer. I just pulled on the scales and pushed the button and they tell you to come in and get your ticket. I had mine weighed during the middle of a Sunday afternoon when they weren't busy. Get ready for a shock!

Brad I think there is a cat scale in Commerce City. I remember doing a search on that a couple years ago.

Dusty,
Found it! Tried a search on CAT scales (new term to me) and found this link http://catscale.findlocation.com/ good nationwide.
It has the one in Commerce City, but also found one a few blocks from Camping World where I'll be headed next week for the pin box. That is IF it ever quits snowing here!
Thanks all,
Brad

We have truck scales along the highways here in Washington that open at verious times. We find one that does not require the truckers to stop at that time, pull onto the scales and go look through the window and get our reading. Works great and it's free.

Brad, most of the CAT scales are broken down into 4 scales. Therefore just drive onto it until the front axel is on one platform the back on another and the trailer axel on the third one.

Brad: Weighed my motor home several years ago at one of the rock places down along Santa Fe. You know, where they sell landscaping rock. Was a lot closer.

Clyde,
Are they south of Titan Rd? I probably drive by there all the time to put the monty in storage and never noticed it.
Dennis, I was playin on the CAT webpage. Looked pretty neat with the three separate scales. I like Dick's idea though. I'll just stop in that port of entry by Monument and look in the window. They are closed a good percentage of the time.
Dory told me I can't weigh it anyway. She said it will only lead to something ELSE that I need .

They're pretty much all north of Titan. Think the one I went to at the time was west of Split Rail Fence Company? (It was 11 1/2 years ago.) The commercial type scales where trucks go will likely charge you for 2 trips across the scales. (They're figuring you want to be weighed loaded and empty.) If you went to a place like that, you could more than likely get the whole rig weighed, unhook nearby, and weigh the truck separate. That would be your two trips across. I've never done it with the Monty yet, and have always wanted to, just never took the time.

Tell Dory you need to know the exact weight so you will know how many toys you can add. That should go over good.

make sure you're standing on the scales too so your weight will be included. Many times you may have to get out to activate the speaker and once you're acknowledge step back on the scales. takes less than 5 minutes to get weighed and get your ticket....if there are no lines. I think everyone should have theirs weighed at least once to get a baseline.

I hit a CAT Scale -
Our 3400RL empty - with 2nd AC, gel coat, alloys, fireplace, fantastic fan, standard refrigerator, coffee table, end table, LCD, fifth airborne pin box (I believe everything else is relatively standard -)
Axles (both) 8,640
Pin 3,120
Gross - 11,760
F350 Ford (no passengers) 8,040
Total Gross 19,800.
A little surprised on the pin weight, but there is nothing loaded behind the axle.

I believe the fresh water tank is behind the axle. At least that's where the drain is. Water in that tank will add to overall weight and on the axles but should reduce pinweight. You must not have much in the rig, yet. With 1/2 fresh water and all our gear ours weighs 14,620 with pinweight of 2,860, and 11,760 on the axles. The overall weight of the rig is 23,160 and that includes full diesel, both of us, and all gear including a full, heavy steel crossbed toolbox, hitch, etc.

Steve,
If you're at 2,800 on the pin, then given your explanation I should be about what I should expect with no water and completely empty (as it was from the dealer).
Hopefully will balance out - got a 295lb gen to put in the front and a W/D. That 600 lbs or so of rear water will have to pull some off the nose.

Brad, I just find it a bit disconcerting that your pinweight with an empty rig is that high, a full 1,120 pound more than the Montana website says.
When I figure pinweight I take the total of both truck axles when hitched, then subtract the total of both truck axles when unhitched. The difference is pinweight. I do the weighings one right after the other so the truck has the same amount of fuel, gear, and passengers. This is the same method you used, right? I guess I'm questioning your numbers but don't mean to offend. The numbers just boggle my mind and I'm trying to find an explanation. Just my nature, I guess.
