Boost problem
Boost problem:
I had a problem with the turbo boost but it has gone away. Seemed like something was sticking since it would smoke, no power, no boost pressure then break loose and be ok, (boost and power). Called dealer and was told that carbon could be in EGR valve and it would need cleaning or replaced.
Got to next campground and problem has gone away. Does this mean I don’t need to go into the shop?

My turbo on my 2005 Ford had carbon built up and had to be cleaned. The test on the EGR valve showed it ok. It might be a good idea to have it checked, better than being broken down along the side of the road.

I had a 2006 with the same issue, but also got the dreaded engine light when it occurred. Took it to Ford, since it was still under warranty at the time, and they ended up removing the turbo and cleaning the vanes. The 2006 turbo had a variable pitch blade design that changes depending on vacuum and boost demands. The Ford tech told me that carbon and soot build up on the vains caused them to stick and not fuction as designed. Not sure if yours is experiencing the same issue or not.

When I had my 2006 6.0 F350 the service tech told me that the 6.0 PSD engine needed you to drive it like you stold it (hard) to keep the carbon out of the EGR and the turbo variable pitch vanes. He also siad to add fuel additive to each tank to keep the cetane rating high to burn the carbon when possible. Finaly traded it in for a 2011 6.7 F350 and haven't looked back. LOVE the new truck!

You need to run these diesels hard to keep them clean. We run 90% of our miles towing and at high boost and have not had a issue..yet..on our 08b F 350. Ditto on the cetane booster. We also have a after market gage so we can see what our EGT's are when towing. Need some heat in there.

We had much the same problem on our 6.0. Would recommend getting it cleaned and then running the cetane booster in every tank.

My problem has gone away. Stopped at truck diesel shop just down the street from where we are camping. He said if problem is not there it's nothing they could do. Talked to a local Ford dealer and was told they have a month of truck work in shop. The comment of a sticking valve or turbo makes since, it would break loose and work until turbo pressure went back to zero, then was stuck agan.
I have never used a fuel additive and what I understand you are telling me I should be. Just filled tank yesterday and will get some Cetane Booster today and put in the full tank (27 gal tank) which we will use up before we pull again so maybe it will start working.
Thanks for the advice.

Suggest you do the maintenance on your 6.0 and find out if any error codes are in your trucks computer which will let the technician diagnosis the issues. No fun getting stuck on the road!

Just a note: if you buy that Power Stroke Cetane Boost from Ford, you can save a bout $2.00 a bottle by buying a case of 12 bottles. A bottle treats 100 gallons of diesel. It is a 20 oz bottle, so 4 oz for every 25 gallons.

We are in campground for a month without pulling. Plan to go to local Ford dealer and see if they have the "Power Stroke Cetane Boost from Ford" that Stiles suggested. When I talked to the local dealer where I am camped he said he could not get me in for a month. If my dealer is correct and it was carbon and cleared itself then problem gone? I drove it again today and still running normal. Thanks for the advice.

Took truck disel garage down the street when it was failing and left it. Got truck back yesterday. Problem was with carbon in EGR valve holding it open when cold, shold be closed when starting up cold so I was told. They cleaned the EGR valve and it fixed the problem. Put about 50 miles on it today and ran fine.

Check into disconnecting the EGR. It wont hurt nothing and you wont ever have this problem again. The diesel tech at my Ford dealer disconnected mine.

Everything is working fine now so I am going to leave it alone. Now that I have learned more about it from the Tech I am not worried if it does it again.

Stiles, a 20oz bottle treats 125 gallons.
