Truck starting by itself

Got to our new site yesterday. Whilst setting up, keys inside truck, engine off, the truck locked and remote started by itself. Turned back off. Locked twice more. Then the alarm started blaring. Alarm turned off and truck locked a few more times over the next few minutes. I thought it was a prank because you should have seen us running toward the door everytime we heard the lock hoping it was unlocking so we could get the keys out.

Locksmith came and got us back inside the truck.
We finished unloading and setting up our site and the alarm went off again by itself. I thought it was because we were throwing heavy paving stones into the bed. But, it happened again during the night and this morning remote started by itself once again.

Is someone trying to steal this thing or do I have some other problem?

It looks like it wants to leave home!

Ford has a combination lock entry, so you can always get in.

Seriously though, I have never heard of this before. It sounds bizarre!

only thing I can come up with is remote in pocket and pocket starts, but hat is unlikely

If it starts by itself does that mean it could turn off while running down the road? That engine goes off, so does steering and brakes.

Good Luck

I would suggest that you contact ONSTAR from your truck, when you can get inside. Everything that you describe observing on your truck, are things that I can control on my 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 from anywhere in the world using myGMC app on my phone. If ONSTAR has inadvertently linked your truck to another user, someone else is just as disappointed at there phone remote control not working. ONSTAR likely records all such activities and can advise you if this is a possibility.
Good luck!

Does someone have your vin and the onStar app? You can control the truck from a phone even if you don't own it, all you need is the vin and you can setup the account and do everything with it from starting it to tracking it

Thanks. That seems likely and I know someone who would very much be guilty of this behavior. Now to find out if it’s a crime...

Have both your batteries checked, I had a similar issue with an older truck and it was a battery issue.

The remote starting happens to me every now and then when I have two sets of keys in my pocket and am doing some type of heavy labor. Bending and squating causing the button on the truck keys to be pushed by keys for the car. It's never happened from my wifes keys, but it certainly could while mine were in the truck.

While I don't know if its a criminal activity or not, IF someone done this to you as a joke, they are just waiting for you to say something about it to them. I bet they are ROFL wondering what your reactions are.

The Onstar advice is good. The only thing like this that ever happened to me was on our (now gone) Saturn Vue. It didn't have remote start, but it would randomly have the alarm sound off, or driving down the road the windshield wipers would start working. It ended up being the BCM (Body Control Module). Only available from the dealer (VIN specific), and cost $500. Hope that isn't your problem.

That’s nice.
It actually was an ONSTAR issue.
Fixed with them and no more problems. No battery or electrical issue

Did Onstar say what actually was happening to cause the problem?

This brings up another problem. Since all of these vehicles are hooked to the internet someone can take control of any of them. The computers can be remotely controlled to have the vehicle do anything someone programs it to do. How about go at wide open throttle and you couldn’t cut it off. If they have electric steering like most to, but not our truck, how about make a hard left turn when the vehicle gets up to 70 MPH. It’s scary when you think about it.

Hi

If you had called On Star they would have unlocked the truck so you wouldn’t have to pay a lock smith.

I had wife do that for me once when I locked the keys in ours.

You see I bought this truck and gave it to wife for her birthday and the results in my not being able to even get a key made for it.

It could be some sort of electronic device in the area that shares the same frequency as your remote control. I wouldn't worry to much unless it were to happen at multiple locations.

Onstar has a remote start option if the vehicle supports it, I think. I have the phone app to unlock mine, and have tried it a few times for fun. It works.
