Unhappy Roller Shades

2016 3721 with roller shades installed. The first night from dealer the one across the rear window busted and unrolled. Dealer replaced OK.

Than I drove from Des Moines to western Neb. Same shade fell down with screws pulled out of header.

Drove to winter parking, 4 months later the same shade fell down again. ,

2 times internal spring fails, 3rd was a mounting problem.

Any experience with this?

I still have 15 days of warranty with Montana.

Dealer is willing to step up but Have warred me about unreasonable demands. from Montana.

I can't remember where I saw it/them but this is not the first post I have recently read about problems with these roll up shades. Making me have second thoughts about "upgrading" to them.

If I were you I would tell the dealer to take his warnings and shove them. Your warranty should be the same on day #365 as it was on day #1 (IF it was any good then)!

It would be to your benefit to contact Keystone Customer Service directly and have a folder started for your current complaints with the Monty. Do not rely on your dealer doing this.

Joe, We have a 2017 Monty with day night roller shades, and two are broken. The big one over the couch was bad on the first leg of our first trip. So when we got back, we had them order a new one, and they sent only the day shade, so the techs installed it anyway, and said they would order the correct ones. We drove 5 miles to put it in storage and it too had fallen off. We are scheduled for a service in 2 weeks to fix both again. Hope the third time is the charm?

It would be interesting to know who made those shades. I've heard some referred to as MCD shades, but there is at least one company in the Elkhart/Goshen area making knock off shades that look similar, but are much cheaper.

We purchased an on the lot 2017 3611 (not legacy) and wanted MCD shades. The camper had just the night shades in it. We "verbally" said MCD shade upgrade with day/night was wanted (researched MCD online) and negotiated paying half the cost. We incorrectly assumed MCD shades were what Keystone used. We got "Slow Riser" shades and have had to replace two so far under warranty. Our bad! Now, not sure MCD are better but wish we had this in writing before purchasing. Buyer beware!

It sounds like we are one of the lucky ones! We've had our 2016 3160 for over a year and have no issues with the roller shades. We only have the night shades and they are the slow rise. We like them so much better than the pleated shades! Those things were awful. A fellow traveler told us the big thing was to not travel with the shades down because they get swinging and cause possible issues. I know it keeps the trailer cooler if you put the shades down, but I would prefer to lessen the opportunity for problems!

We love our MCD shades so far. The do say MCD right on the pull rod so it's easy to tell if that's what you have.

Adams7806,

Good idea. I think i will leave the day shades down and the night shades up when traveling, and see how that works this year. Just need to get them right first.

Our 2017 (bought in 2016) 3661RL came equipped with the slow-rise shades. Made by Irvine Shade and Door Co. I can't say that I'm overly impressed. The large roller behind the theater seating failed during the trip from the dealer to the storage lot. The shade beside the bed failed a couple months later, and the shade behind the couch failed about three months ago. One was fixed under warranty, one was fixed by me, and the last one I fixed after Irvine sent me new internals (no charge). We have several others in the rig and they've worked just fine, so I'm guessing maybe they have inconsistent quality control. There are several YouTube videos on repairing and adjusting these shades, although that might be a warning of some kind.

If you have those links, please share them, because I'm thinking even though I bought the extended warranty, I might be fixing these shades on the road? :-)

FWIW, we got our Montana in April and on the first trip the dining shade fell off, and on the second one of the bedroom shades fell off! Both need to be replaced since the mechanism inside broke... but we've yet to make the trip to the dealer. Sigh...

Also, I checked the link above for making one of my (working) shades roll up slower, but it doesn't work. Either mine is a different kind (I don't have two rollers on the side) or the shade is faulty somehow? Guess another question for the dealer...

I have the MCD day and night shades throughout the rv also and i have had no trouble also. I had mine installed my MCD in Mckinney Tx. at there headquarters. I've only had mine 7 months and i haven't used all of my shades yet but they are much better than the antiquated accordian shades. Hopefully the factory install at MCD is better than the factory install at Keystone.

Ascot shades

Does anyone have these? Ours is a 2017, 305RL with pull down, slow rise, solid tan vinyl ASCOT shades. Two have quit working. Contacted Ascot but they haven't bothered to respond after at least a month of waiting. We are beyond warranty of course. I wish I could get them fixed or better yet learn to make repairs myself. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Darrel

These are so much better than the day/night shades we had on previous rig. No strings to break etc etc.

The Slow Rise shades in our SOB are from Irving Shade and Door in Elkhart and they have been very easy to work with.
Maybe if you don't get anywhere with ASCOT or Keystone you could check with them.

I hate to say it but I had on whole assembly including the valance fall off the wall, think tall narrow window on the side of the couch. No fault of the shade at all, just shoddy work hanging the assemblies by the workers at the Montana assembly plant. I had some of the crown moldings fall off of the wall also. Not the crown moldings fault, just more shoddy work at the plant. Same workmanship as our dealership here. Still fell of the wall until I finally fixed it myself. Sometimes if you want it done correctly you have to do it yourself.
