Electric Outlets

This morning a number of outlets in our 3121RL quit working. I checked all the breakers and fuses and all appear to be okay. It appears all the outlets effected are the ones that are not noted as GFI protected. Any thoughts?

It sounds like you may have lost one leg of your power coming in. Check at the pedestal first and then at the input of your power cord to the rig.

We do have power to other things like microwave and refrigerator. It just appears to be select outlets at this point.

Did you check and reset the GFI? You didn't mention that other than to say they are all GFI related. Somewhere in the RV is one outlet with the GFI reset. Bathroom is a likely location.

As Dick mentioned, it could be loss of one hot leg from your shore power. The 50 amp service has two 120 vac hot legs. Some outlets operate from one hot leg while others operate from the other hot leg to balance the electrical loading. Since the non functioning outlets are not labeled GFCI protected, I would suspect a missing hot leg.

Also check all your circuit breakers. A tripped breaker does not flip the breaker handle to the OFF position. It just moves it very slightly from the ON position. If one of the breaker handles feels "soft" when you press it toward ON, then it is likely tripped. You have to turn it OFF then back ON to reset it.

Most GFCI receptacles have a wiring option to give GFCI protection to non-GFCI outlets downstream. If there is a ground fault on one of the downstream outlets, the actual GFCI will trip regardless of it's location. A GFCI is required within 6' of a sink (bath or kitchen), outdoors, and a number of other locations that aren't applicable on an RV. The bathroom GFCI on my Monty protects the one on the kitchen island and the outdoor outlet. I'm thinking it's a remote GFCI that's tripped. The fact it's not labeled could well be a mistake in the (lack of) quality control RV manufacturers are practicing now.

Check to see if the wires are attached to the breaker. I had a couple that pulled out.

If you have a transfer switch, they are great at dropping one leg of the power coming in.
I by passed (eliminated) mine after going through two of them.

What is a transfer switch? How would we know if we have one and/or need one?

Brian,

A transfer switch is used to select sources of a/c electric power for your rig such as onboard genny, inverter or shore power.

You rig may have one if it has genny prep or a large inverter. Most are automatic but there are also manual ones.

If you have a RV reefer and do not have an onboard genny you likely do not have a transfer switch.

In our unit, each AC is on one leg of the 50 amp input.

The OP said the outlets affected are NOT GFI protected outlets. I’ll have to look at mine. I thought all my outlets were GFI protected but have never really checked.

Generally speaking, outlets near a water source (kitchen, bathroom, outside) will either be a GFCI outlet or a “ GFCI protected outlet” meaning one that is a standard outlet wired downstream of a true GFCI outlet. A “protected” outlet should have a sticker with that notation. Living area, bedroom, etc are not required to be GFCI protected. But with the way these things are wired who knows.

do you have a generator? or is it prepted from the factory for a generator if either it will have a transfer switch. and do you have a TEST set? you need to check it from the pedestal and keep moving forward to find the problem. if it checks good at the pedestal then check at your fuse panel. i suspect it probably will be at the transfer switch i amongst many others have had bad transfer switches. my transfer switch is behind the panel in the storage bay right behind the in command panel control. let us know how it is going and if you need help

This is what it looks like in my 3120. Transfer switch isolates inverter when park power is connected.
