I am also looking at a (Progressive Industries HW50C 50). installation. I do have a 5500 genset and from what I have read you can include the genset or just wire it in to protect your unit from bad voltage at the pedestals. If you do some internet searches you can find out quite a bit on the Progressive Industries and the Surge Guard. Some of the reviews that I read showed the SG with a higher rating then the PI but when I actually looked at the specifications they were different than what a lot of the reviews stated. I assume that it is a newer model. I liked the lifetime warrantee of the PI over the one year of the SG plus it was made in America.
I will probably include both pedestal and genset in my wiring.

Since the 50 AMP power comes into the RV from the rear Montana runs it to the circuit breaker panel (unless you have the generator prep where it runs to the auto xfer switch??). You will find lots of examples of inline installation if you do a "Search" of both Active and Archived topics.

I don't know about an Onan 5500, but typically the PI (and SG) have problems with generators due to their "floating ground".

Have a 3791rd also. Progressive Industries inline protector is behind the power center under the closet. Pete's RV installed it for us.
Monitor is in withe switches. ...just to the left and above the master bedroom slide switch.
Has already saved the rig. Had bad power at a pedestql on our 2nd outing. Would have been very bad if it hadn't been installed.

Just to be clear the folks above are not talking about a surge protector, their talking about a Progressive EMS. If your going to install something permanent get an EMS and if you want the best system with excellent customer service get a Progressive.

I agree with Dick.
Charlog5, different floor plans have circuit breaker panels and transfer switches mounted in different locations and I'm not familiar with your floor plan. Many times, there is room behind the CB panel to install it but you do want it mounted after the transfer switch.

Dick can you please explain what you mean by the folks above are not talking about a surge protector. In my research it seemed to me that it also cover surge or voltage spikes, or are you saying it covers more than surges. I want to make sure I am buying the correct component. I thought this covered most everything except power shedding management.

· Lost/Open Neutral Protection
· Frequency Protection

· Integrated Digital Readout

I installed my Progressive Industries behind the circuit breaker panel. Easy to remove/replace the panel.

What dick was saying is that there are full feature EMS systems and there are also units that do nothing more than surge protection. Cw and others carry both usually. Just buying a surge only unit is a waste of money, my opinion of course. John

Sounds like you have a similar devise. Here's what we're talking about : http://www.progressiveindustries.net/#!ems-hw50c/cjk6
You can get them cheaper elsewhere, but if you go to the home page you can see installation videos that are probably good for other brands as well.

Dick that is the same one that I am looking to purchase and install in 3160 RL LE. :-)
The new ones seem to have better J ratings than some of their earlier ones.

All this talk of where to mount the thing and how to wire it, why not go with a portable unit? You can plug it in before even pulling your trailer into a slot to check the power supply for problems, and when the thing dies it's a WHOLE bunch easier to send it back for a replacement. No digging it out and un-mounting it from wherever you tried to hide it. Just package it up and send it. After doing a portable, I wouldn't consider a hard-wired unit, but to each their own...
