Propane for Winter Heat

This will be our first winter in the Monte (in NYS) and I am reading everything I can to make sure we are prepared. I'm sure I'll have many more questions but right now I'm working on setting up for propane for using the furnace. We have (2) 30lb tanks which I know will not last us anytime at all when it gets cold out (its already in the upper 30's at night). What's the best way to handle this? Should we buy a 100 lb tank (or two) and take it in to get refilled ourselves OR have a local propane delivery service set us up. From what I'm reading if we use the propane delivery their tanks and regulators are different from the typical RV tank and we would have to have fittings changed (is this correct?) I'm assuming if we buy our own tank it would be the same as a gas grill tank and we could simply use the hoses already on our camper (or maybe need an extension?)

Thanks for any help!

Deb

Why don't you see if you can get a local propane company to set up a 100gallon tank for you. They will put on the proper regulator and when low they will come to fill it. 100lb tank will get used up quickly.

Yep just as racerjoe says and that is what I did when I was in a space for 2 years called the propane company and they set up the 80 gal tank right next to our rv and when we moved out they took it away,They did EVERYTHING but they do charge a deposit for the tank but I got it back when we moved out and they came every month or so to fill it up or just top it off ,and by the way I know NY gets colder than here in the NW but 80 Gallons of propane would last me quite a while in the winter ,

As others have said, go with the local propane dealer. Any good one will have the fittings that you need and can fix you right up. Plus the large tank and them checking from time to time will keep you from discovering your out of gas in the middle of a really cold night.

Thanks! I've called a local company and they are going to see what they can do to set me up.

We agree with getting a propane dealer and a larger tank. About three winters ago we spent several nights with temps in the mid-teens and were burning a 30 lb. tank every day to day and a half.

Not sure what you're all paying, but I use a local welding supply store near our stickhouse to refill at $1.90 a gallon. It costs less than $20 to fill up my 30#ers. How does that compare to you all?

So far we fulltime but stay close to our stickhouse and I'm not looking forward to having to pay more elsewhere on a long distance trip.

At our stick house we have an underground 500 lb tank and when I just topped off for the season I paid $1.29/gal (best price ever!). We are 2 1/2 hours from home and the local supplier here quoted me $3.35/gal for delivery. Where I've been taking my 30 lb tanks here I've been paying $15. They said it runs around $65 if I have my own 100 lb tanks and fill them myself. Biggest problem with that is Mark works (6) 12's and I cannot lift those big tanks by myself.
