RVND 7720 !

I just received my (early) Christmas present, a Rand McNally RVND-7720 gps unit. WOW, this thing is big! My old gps is a tiny, cheap thing that has served me for about five years. We wanted to upgrade and found a deal on the 7720 so we thought we would dive in. I haven't had it in the vehicle yet but have been reading, and playing with it, to learn how it works. If it does all it claims it will do I will be impressed. I look forward to using it this coming camping season.

Gladly. It might be a while since the Monty is in bed for the winter but I will play with the new gps in the vehicle anyway.

We've been looking at new GPSs since our Garmin quit last winter. We have considered the 7720 but are concerned it might be too big for the truck. Dick, does it fit comfortably on your dash?

Yes, what I do is use the suction mount to the window so low that it sits on the dash (put a towel under it, don't know exactly why) just over the in-dash one. It just blocks my view of a portion of the passenger side hood.

The 7" screen is big. I haven't tried mounting in the truck yet but I'll figure it out.

Sure I just ordered a 7710! If I had any luck it would have to be bad!

I think you guys will like them. I've found when I'm driving I use it to set my speed and also to tell me speed limits without really taking my eye off the road. I use the speed warning function and really like that also since I don't have to closely watch for lowered speeds anymore I can spend all my time watching for idiots cutting in front of me.

I ordered one from Amazon yesterday and it will be here Thursday.

Saturday I'm going up to Indiana to MorRyde and Lippert for a couple of days for work on the Monty so I'll get to give it a workover and see how she does on a quick 1,800 mile RT.

Does the RVND 7720 have Lane-Assist when approaching a forking or merging of major roadways?

I have logged 500 miles with mine and yes the screen is big.

Yes it has the lane assist for exits.

It has strong audio.

As with any GPS you have to watch your setting (road preference) and which route it takes you.

The RV Warning does work, I found out at 3 AM on Friday and turned around.

I too have gotten use to the speed recommendation and speed warning.

I like its campground data base which references AllStays which is great on the Iphone.

I have not used their other check list items much. With those capabilities on all the other smart devices who knows.

I feel the Video input was an after thought. They did not include any interface plug or directions and do not use a standard pin or pin out logic. DIESELBOSS can help take care of that problem.

There is NO audio interface to go with the video. My 10 year old GPS has that.

I bought this one because it had the campgrounds (like) and the video for my back up camera. With the limitations of no interface and no audio I claim that should not be a decision factor. It was with my purchase before I found the limiters.

We like ours a lot. Two things not so good on ours is 1. Hard to see the screen in bright sun, 2. It will not save current location exactly - seems to save coordinates up to 1/2 mile away.

Drew-- You can buy the screen tint or pealoff covers for the screen to give you better sight of the screen and no sun glare. I also thought the 7720 had a screen brightener so you could brighten the screen for sun glare also. Maybe I was reading this on another model or another brand OR maybe it was just in my dreams!

Thanks for the info.
It does have the screen brightener which I have cranked up, but still is a problem in full sun. Maybe the shade you described will work. I will have to check on that.

Just got our 7720 yesterday & yeah it's BIG! Gonna figure out a way to mount it to the face of the dash just below the radio. Lotsa bells & whistles - too soon to tell if they all work. Biggest thing is rig & TV data input for avoidances. Will wring it out on our way to Texas in a few weeks...

PS - if ya want a better price than Amazon, go to http://shop.bristolcountyrv.com/Rand...ps-22-1360.htm

Great to work with, no tax, free 2-day priority shipping 'till Xmas...

Two questions John: can you turn off the speed warning? Also can you expound on the 3 AM issue?

Tom,
Yes you can turn off the excessive speed alert.

I was heading south and knew I would leave early so I went to bed at 9 and pulled out about 2:30 AM. I took a short cut and the RV Alert went off. Then I remembered a low bridge in that shortcut and turned around. I did not have to back out in the middle of the night by myself.
I did nap from 6:30 to 9:30 and get back on the road.

Learning how to set the different route preferences does adjust or change the GPS routing.
Originally it was routing me through Washington DC on the local interstate. I changed a routing preference and it took me around on the beltway.

As John says, we love the basics. Beside the screen covers Rondo mentioned, you can also buy sun shades for it from Amazon and others.
