Reese Elite Puck Removal
I’m trying to remove a 20,000 pound Reese elite puck hitch from my 2019 Ram 3500. Got sold on the puck because of the ease of removal for a rail free bed. Uh Huh. Ain’t happening.
I removed the pins so I could turn the release levers. That in itself was interesting as I had to use a hammer as a slight persuader due to the tightness of the levers.
Once loosen the hitch would not budge. My concern is that after installing the hitch I had a spray on bed liner installed. Is it possible that the increased thickness is causing the problem?
If so, how do I correct it?
Thx

It sounds like the hitch is stuck to the spray in liner. Did they remove the hitch to do the spray job? The hitch should lift out once the pucks are open. Can you slide a thin wire under the hitch to cut any stiction?

My son came over and showed me what I was doing wrong. I was turning the release handles past 90 degrees which caused it to re-engage the puck thus preventing it from releasing. Once we had all pucks in the proper position, out it came.
I still need to make some adjustment so that I can release it manually without tapping it with a hammer.
Thx for the quick response.

The Ram must be different from my Ford. As I recall (I only take the hitch out every year or two) I can't turn the handles more than 90 degrees. Now I am curious and will have to go give it a try. Plus there is clunk back there that bothers me.

On my Ford the handles have to be at 90 to remove or install and mine can move slightly past that.
There is height adjustment on mine for the puck pins to remove excess play. That could be the source of your clunk if the pins are moving up and down.

Remove the cotter pin and hand tighten the nut to eliminate any looseness. Make sure the puck is in the latched position first. That should eliminate the clunk.

My ford puck system requires 90degrees for installation and removal.

As stated above, 90 degrees for in/out. Mine stuck after being in for over 6 months. I had to put some penetrating oil on it. Deep Creep by SeaFoam is the best stuff around.

Alls well that ends well. When I removed the hitch I left it attached to Monte and raised the front end until hitch was clear if the bed. Pulled out, picked up my new chair and than attempted to re-install the hitch in the truck.
When I had my old rail system I had minimal problems lining it up and dropping it in the rails. The few times that I was off, a little jiggle got it in line.
This puck system is a whole new problem. After hours of trying I finally got it re-installed. Any tricks to make this easier?
