I use a cetane boost and have increased my mileage 2-3 mpg. I also use an injector clean. I add both of these at every fill up.
I have never experienced bad fuel, I change my primary filter on a regular scheduled basis. I have yet to experience any water when draining my secondary filter/ water separator. Additives are not cheap, but they are cheap compared to engine repairs.

For example, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) currently mandates a minimum 53 CN, while Texas (TxLED) set its highway diesel CN lower, at a minimum of 48.

I thought the Ford Diesel Supplement recommended a minimum Cetane level of 40. But I haven't found that documentation, yet. In the mean time, ask what is your state's minimum Cetane requirement? Perhaps that Cetane additive is unneeded?

Thanks Carl. I didn’t know cetane could vary from state to state.
I have a friend who can check cetane. The pump says minimum of 40. His test in some cases was lower. I don’t know how accurate his test equipment was. You take all of this with a grain of salt.

I've never really noticed, is the cetane rating posted at the pump like the octane ratings are?

All of the local diesel pumps in our area have a cetane sticker that say it is or exceeds 40. Your performance and mileage will suffer if it's on the low end. I can make exactly the same trip and get 12mpg hauling or like last week, 10.2. Without 5er can be as high as 22 or as low as 18 - same trip/road/approx. weather

That Lynwood is a excellent article.I learned that back in 2008 when a old Diesel mechanic at the Ford dealership that I purchased my 08 F-350 told me "you got to learn about Cetane " Every diesel owner needs to read that link.

Losses injectors twice, due to bad fuel, once at mom and pop station and once at big truck stop. I'd some checking and end up doing work myself.

On our 2007 Dodge 6.7 we picked up a bad batch of fuel which case the filter to clog. This in turn caused a low fuel supply to the high pressure pump, causing the engine computer to adjust to a lean fuel ratio. This caused a sooting fuel mixture to plug the DPF filter, intercooler, throttle valve. They put in the new parts with a upgraded intercooler to a cost of $7,000. I asked why the computer didn’t shutdown the motor but they could not answer that for me.

I run the claim through my insurance but they would not cover it because it was not vandalism. If someone had put something in the fuel at home they said it would be covered.
The filter had 8,000 miles on it at the time.

I have 2012 Duramax and I heard the horror stories of the high pressure fuel pumps grenading. It happened to a guy at work, just out of warranty, and it cost him $12,000 to fix. Because when the high pressure fuel pump come apart it send metal shaving into the engine fuel system. The high pressure pump and all the fuel components down stream, fuel rails, injectors, etc need to be replaced. Some say water in the fuel will cause it and others blame the poor lube properties of the low sulfur diesel fuel.
Since I don't have $12,000 to fix my truck if it happens I installed a Fass 95 GPH lift pump and I use Opti-lube in my fuel.

The story of the bad fuel in FL deserves skepticism because there's too many facts missing, virtually nonexistent, just testimonial. Not saying it didn't happen and we know there are different qualities of diesel, but there should be some substantiation, especially from others using the same fuel, that they could corroborate the finding and have evidence. There's maybe more going on here that we will never know.

One truck does not get contaminated fuel at a truck stop. Most have several trucks fueling at all times. All pumps draw from the same tanks. Had multiple trucks had a problem it would have made news big time. None would have got out of the station. Many drivers, like me, allow the engine to idle while fueling, would not have finished fueling before a problem noticed.

Water in diesel

In January this year I had fuel filter changed on my 2014 Chevy 3500 SRW with about 98k miles on it...just routine. About a week later I was passing a car and kicked in the turbo to pass the guy, and saw a puff of white smoke come out of tailpipe that looked strangely like steam. It WAS steam! Days later got message in DIC “water in fuel”. There was a couple of possibilities where I got it - both were chevron convenience stores off freeways. Took it to the dealer and had to get another fuel filter. A few days later check engine light came on and the DEF tank heater was out, which requires complete new DEF tank for $1100 (truck was 825 miles out of the 100k warranty). This was not related to the bad fuel but still rubbed me the wrong way. DW and I decided to pull the trigger and traded it for a 2019 DRW in late February. I have been driving a diesel since 2005 and that was my first and only time (that I know of) that I got some bad fuel.

Bad diesel fuel can happen to anyone ,anytime, anyplace. Been pulling diesel since 2005 and well over 100K miles . We never had a problem. We follow the Ford maint schedule to the letter. We buy fuel at high use stations like FJ or other truck stops.

What year and model truck?

The Ford filter system in the ~2012-2014 trucks is a problem. The water sensor sits above the fuel intake pipe. There have been far too many issues with the HPFP in that year range. Ford made changes to the pump in 2015 and then put a new filter in after 2017. Reports on the newer trucks seem to confirm the fix was good.

Hey Linwood,
You say “change your fuel filter regularly”. What do you consider regularly?
Thanks.

12-15k miles. I change my oil and fuel filter at the same time. My 14 Ram has a % change indicator for the fuel filter and the engine oil. They run about the same % but I use the oil indicator as a guideline.
