HELP ! Montana 3000RK Owners

Just got done looking at a 2010 Montana 3000RK and can make a good deal I think on my trade. $16,000 for my 2001 Montana 2880RL and $35,000 cash. Need to know what your true pin weight is on this trailer. Brochure shows 2220#. I have a 3500 Chevy 4x4 long box Duramax Allison. I'm afraid I will be over my pin weight with this trailer. All information will be appreciated. The truck is a single rear- wheel. The trailer had a list price of $57,000.

The only safe way is to weigh the rear axle of the truck empty then with the trailer hooked up. Subtract the little number from the big number. As you use the rig the number will never be the same. If I fill up the fresh water tank I take 200 pounds off the hitch weight. Good luck - John

I tow a 2006 3000 RK and my rear axel weight on my old 2000 ram 2500 was 5800 pounds. I was good on both axels but over the trucks gross wt 8800pounds. I had to replace the dodge due to an incident with some black ice last year. Now using a 2007 chevy with a 9200 GVW and while I have not run it over a scale I do belive I am within the trucks limits.

BigRed, Seems I recall folks saying if you can't get a dealer to give you 20-30% off the list price, you should probably go somewhere else. I have no knowledge of tradein value for your unit. You might want to take a look at this site http://www.rvs-r-us.com/ I used them to price my unit and got a fair value. This is not a free service but may give you a starting point.. I guess it depends on what you value your '01 for. Good Luck!!!!

On our 2008 3000RK loaded to go for a couple of weeks, but only about 20 gallons of fresh water, waste tanks empty the pin weight is as you read about 2200 pounds. Everyone will have a slightly different number of course. We do not have a w/d and try and run without extra weight.
We do enjoy the 3000RK configuration.
We bought ours new in Feb 2008 and the list price was $53,112, negotiated price was $43,408.
Good luck.

Not really sure what my pin weight is but my 2006 F250 works just fine for me but I am sure i'm over a little. Price sounds a little high to me. Bought my 2009 pretty well loaded around 38K. Straight cash price without trade. Also love the floorplan.

The best way to estimate weight is to calculate a probable case of up to 18-25% of the GTWR as the potential pin weight. For example, the 2010 3000RK states a GTWR of 14,220 which calculates to 2,559 to 3,555 lbs. I do not believe the pin will ever weigh any more than that. You mention your old trailer is a 2006 2880RL but there is no listing for that, but there is a 2006 2980RL which is documented with a GTWR of 15,065. I think the web is wrong. It makes no sense that one of their shortest rigs weighs that much, otherwise you will probably be okay since the new trailer is actually documented as a lighter rig.

The brochures for the new rig state a pin weight of 2,220 which is only about 15.5% of the GTWR and is too LIGHT, but probably accurate for an empty trailer! But the only time it is an empty trailer is when it's being picked up from the lot.

If you get a chance, you should weigh your TV's front axle (FAW), then both axles (GVW) and your rear axle (RAW) including the hitch and full tank of fuel, passengers and everything you typically bring on a trip. Then using the estimated pin weights in the first paragraph add this PW and compare the rear axle weight RATING against the estimated RAW plus PW, and the gross vehicle weight RATING against the GVW plus PW to estimate where you will be. The GVWR, FAWR and RAWR are usually posted on the TV's driver's side pillar. Lastly, you'll need to compare the GTWR of 14,220 plus the GVW that you weighed for your truck to check your book that you are not exceeding the TV's CGVWR (Truck weight plus trailer weight).

Good luck with the weight calculations. I hope this helps.

I agree, that price does not sound like a "deal" to me. You might go to a different dealer, negotiate the best cash deal, THEN tell him/her you have a trade.

I have a 2006 2980. It just happened to have the highest pin weight of any Monty that year. I forget, but somewhere around 2300-2400, I believe. My tow vehicle is a 2005 2500 Silverado with a rear axle rating of 6084 - which just happens to be the load limit for the 2 rear tires. However, after weighing the truck by itself and then with the trailor mounted, the pin weight was around 2800 lb.!!!! And we don't have a lot of clothes in the front of the trailer, either. So I run almost 1000 lb overweight on the truck, but 2 lb under the rear axle!! I do have a 52 Gal fuel tank and a box in the bed and the Superglide hitch weighing around 120-150 lb (plus 80 for the box). All together the extra weight is maybe 26 Gal. diesel at 150-160 lb plus the hitch etc at 200, for a total extra of 360 lb. So even without all this stuff, I would be 600 over the truck limit of 9200. I believe a 3500 has a limit of 9600 (not sure what 4x4 does to that). So you will be over the truck limit, in my opinion. Seems like EVERYONE with a 2500 is over weight on any Montana sold.
Good luck.

The SRW 3500 has a GVWR of 9,900, but you can't get a short bed, so you lose some capacity there, plus lose some more for the extra beef of the one ton. You're probably 99% right on the 2500 overweight comment.
