Nail in trailer tire - Help

Had a slow lead in one of my trailer tires. Found a nail in the tire. Am taking this tire to tire shop tomorrow. If they plug that is this tire still safe for towing the Montana, or should I only use it for a spare, or do I need to replace it? These are new tires by the way.

Normally I would just fix it but hauling all this weight I am wondering.

Thanks,

Chip

If they patch it from the inside, it is a permanent and perfectly safe repair.
A plug installed from the outside is temporary and unsafe for extended use.

Lonnie

Thanks for the speedy reply. I knew there was something about the plug that was important but I couldn't remember what it was.

I agree with Lonnie 200%. I would never ever allow anyone to plug one of my tires from the outside. If you tire dealer even suggests such a repair I would immediately be looking for that Reputable Tire Dealer I am always referring to. No Reputable Tire Dealer would ever plug a tire from the outside.

Lonnie said "A plug installed from the outside is temporary and unsafe for extended use" Even kept as a spare who knows where you might be when you have to use it. You could be many many miles from a dealer and that could be way to far to travel on that plugged tire.

Now how's that for speedy replies. Question asked at 5:25PM and answered in just over 20 minutes with a second reply in just over a hour.

I'd like to see you get thru to most any help desk that fast and forget about getting any real help without spending a half hour on hold. This MOC family is the BEST.

It is the best!

I had pulled the tire, found the nail, and have the tire in the back of my jeep to go off to the tire shop and now I know what to ask for to ensure a positive fix. I can make sure it is fixed correctly and I can be comfortable with the repair.

I always try and pick the experts brain about stuff and this forum is a great place for that. Even stupid questions will bring out important information to add to your base of knowledge.

Anyway thanks again,
Chip
