duramax oil change

the owner's manual and the digital readout on the dash of our 2007 chevy with duramax indicates a 10,000 mile oil change requirement. The chevy dealers that I have dealt with all push for a 3,000 mile oil change. Opinions?

My dealer suggests 5k for the oil/filter replacement. I also asked that question. I can remember when the oil and filter were either 7k or 7.5k (for gas). I'm happy with 5K or up to 6k if traveling. I personally see no reason to change every 3k. I only use the mileage, 3 months makes no sense, the oil can sit in a can for longer than 3 months, and they will still use it, so why should I discard it after 3 months if I have not driven any distance with it.

I change mine when the message center comes on and says time to change oil. Sure the dealers are for 3000 miles or 3 months because they want that money. I have been driving diesel trucks for years and have always changed around 10K. Never had a problem the rest of the truck goes before the engine.

My dealer is adamant about using the DIC...he said the 3k oil changes are a waste of time and money. I've been doing the changes a bit early, but not much.

However, I think the allison filter is recommended for an initial change at 5000 miles. In fairness, our dually is at about 7400 after the first year so we are changing, oil, tranny filter and rotating tires before the new pulling season begins. I am not recommending this, just stating what we are doing out of personal preference. The way I see it, with our mileage rate per year, I will do this once a year before the camping season begins, then I don't have to worry about what mileage I am at. Our situation most likely is drastically different from others.

My dealer says since GM programs the DIC for 10k I should follow it. HI do always change it before long trips.

I like using the oil change reminder but have never went past "50% oil life" before changing the oil and filters. This is usually around 5000 miles between services.

I have free maintenance for 2 yr or 24,000 miles. My dealer says change it every 5,000 miles and do not trust the DIC. It's his money so I changed at 4500 miles and will again at 10,000.
Your transmission filter takes 5 minutes to change and its very easy. I bought my filters (4) from a International dealers for 6.34 a filter. Just unscrew the old and fill up the new filter and screw new one on.
You won't have to add transmission fluid from the top or jack up your truck.

I change my oil every 7-10,000 miles. Most did not state if they use synthetic oil or conventional oil. I run synthetic and from what I have heard and read anything less is not necessary/personal preference. Some run it considerably longer. Just use a good filter. On the Allison transmission filter remember that outside filter is a secondary bypass filter. There is another one inside that needs to be changed at least by 50,000 miles.

Change it at 5,000 miles first time. Change the transmision filter and don't for get to clean the magnet in the filter and put in into the new filter. First time changes are important in case there are any machining slivers that might be in the engine or transmission. The DIC says 10,000 but i feel safer doing a change early.

I'm trying to go by the book on this one too, but it's hard for me.
My last truck which was a gasser got changed religiously at 3000.
It would stand to reason since the capacity is nearly twice as much that the frequency should be too, but then again, that oil is mighty black.

I'm running all Mobil 1 synthetic fluids, and change oil and filter once a year, which is about 7500 miles for us. Our oil minder is always reset, and has never come on at that interval. I also change the fuel filters and air filter at the same time. The spin on Allison filter gets changed in the spring and fall, which is usually about 4000-5000 miles. Usually diesel oil gets black quickly, so that doesn't mean much; it certainly doesn't require an immediate oil change. If you want your oil changes to go extended intervals, install a bypass oil filter, submit oil samples and go by your lab results. If I remember correctly, Allison recommends changing the internal filter only if the transmission is rebuilt, as the external spin on does most of the filtering, unlike most other transmissions with only the internal filter.

We have owned 5 Duramax's and I change the first at 5,000 and then on at 8,000 and use Rotella 15/40 and haven't had a problem. I also recomend changing the spin on Allison filter at 5,000. Its just a feel better thing for me. The fuel filter is just a change at the least 1 time a year but I always carry a spare just in case I happen to get some dirty fuel. GBY....

Things may have changed, but the last time I looked, Allison indicated the internal filter only needs changing at overhaul

I paid good money for the DID in the dashboard so I go by it, which usually is pushing over 8K before it hits less than 10%.

8.1al, I may be wrong on this, I haven't read the manual on this 2008. But you are correct on the internal filter, only at overhaul but Allison has a spin on filter on the rear outside of the Transmission. But if I'm wrong I stand corrected. GBY....

No I don't think you're wrong, it's because of the spin on filter that the internal filter can go so long. Oddly enough the manual for our 2001 said nothing about changing the spin on at 5k but later ones did.

As for the engine, since I use synthetic I am quite comfortable letting the computer tell me when to change the oil,it knows when and how much you are towing and adjusts the oil change interval accordingly.
