Alright Dodge folks...I'm a newbie & need your Dodge-specific hitch advice.

I just picked up my '06 3500 Dually Megacab yesterday, picking up my '05 2955RL next week. I'm very excited things are finally coming together, but now choosing a hitch is turning out harder (and more expensive) than expected.

I'm looking at the Pullrite after reading so many horror stories of rigs kissing cabs. But the rep at Pullrite says many people with Dodge short boxes choose the 24K, regardless of weight needs, because it has a longer slide path than the 16K (18" on 24K vs. 14" on 16K). She says this is a common issue for Dodge tv's.

Apparently, the 16K requires the pin to be 2" in front of the cone, whereas the 24K can accomodate a pin up to 4" under the cone. I don't think the pin is out that far on the 2955RL.

Anybody out there have any experience with the SuperGlide in a Dodge? I'd rather not tote the extra 100 lbs (and $1000 bucks) to get a 24K if I don't have to.

Most gracious for your help!

213007237,

See the link below, it's the best profile shot I have of my 05 3400RL. My king pin is just over 9" behind my front cap.
I have the 16K Pullrite and it works just fine in a 2004.5 short bed. I’ve heard the megacabs use the same size bed.
I went with the Pullrite super rails. There's nothing left in the bed when I remove the hitch other than (4) 1-1/4" holes.

Ken, thanks for the pic--nice! I can't wait to hit the road. I got a little more activity on RV.net. Here's an update I posted there:

Thanks for all the help everyone! I spoke with a Pullrite rep again. Armed with your feedback, she agreed that the 16K is probably the best choice for me. She said it's lighter than the 24K (324lb vs 427lb w/railkit), has greater resale appeal if I later sell it, and is a GRAND CHEAPER!!!

She said the rounded corners on the rv help. Whether there's enough clearance ultimately depends on if the pinbox is forward enough, and if the "leading edge" on my rv (the furthest-protruding point on the front cap) happens to align with my tv to the point where they could get too close. The only way to tell for sure is too install it and see how everything lines up. In a worst-case scenario, if the 16K doesn't give enough clearance, I could get a pinbox extender (although they don't recommend that).

For those who mentioned they never use their slider--it's not that I don't trust you. It's just that I'm a newbie with a wife, dog, and two small rug-rats in the back who will constantly cause commotion and distraction. For $2k, the SuperGlide sounds like cheap insurance compared to the cost of the tv/rv.

FYI...I found a great deal on SuperGlides at PPLMotorhomes.com They have the 16K for $1255 + $617 for custom railkit (no tv frame drilling=no jeopardizing tv warranty) + $110 S/H. Also ordered Prodigy controller for $99. Should be here in 3 days and I will try installing myself.

Also ordered the SuperGlide converter for the MorRyde pinbox ($85 from MorRyde). This is a custom piece made by MorRyde just for SuperGlide, and bolts right on the MorRyde box. This should avoid any mating/welding issues caused by the regular SuperGlide adapter. Sounds like it's simple to change back, too, in case rv needs towing on a non-SG hitch.

Will let you know if I run into any snafu's. Wish me luck! Thanks again for all the valuable insight.

Greg

213007237,

My wife and I installed our Pullrite. Be sure to measure twice and use a small 1/16 drill to verify the location of your bed holes before you go in with the hole saw.

>She said it's lighter than the 24K (324lb vs 427lb w/railkit),

324Lbs???!!!! Holy crap! no wonder I was sore for a week after that.

Good Luck,

Ken

LOL!

Thanks for the heads-up on the pilot holes. I'm sure it will take me hours just because I will be measuring and re-measuring so many times. It comforts me to find that others have tackled it successfully and not had their rigs fall off in the road. That's what my wife is worried about--she's so supportive

Cadanny-----I just bought an 06 Dodge 3500 dually with the Cummins and the automatic tranny. It has the quad cab and I love it. I towed my Montana 3295RK from Ocala, Florida to upstate NY and you wouldn't even know it was behind it. Lots of power and my wife loves the ride . I just traded the 3295RK for a new 3475RL and it pulls it just as easy.I test drove Chevrolets, and Ford and feel that the Dodge is bettor.

Greg,
You will not be sorry you went with the Superglide. I have sold 5 to folks who have bought 5th wheels over the past 2 years since I bought my coach and hitch. Usually doing a full U-turn is what makes folks come over and want to know how I did that with a shortbed truck?

Paul,
While I am a Chevy guy, I hope your Dodge gives you many miles of happy driving ahead.

I hear alot of people prefer the single rear wheel setup to the dually and say they can't go through car wash or drive-in at the bank etc.
I use mine for an everyday ride. I drive 20 miles one-way to work and the drive-throughs in Gainesville are plenty big. Yes, you have to watch how and where you park.
Pulling the 5'er is a joy. Most times you don't know anything is behind you until you look.
Not bad for a six-cylinder.
