New to Fifth Wheeling

Just bought a used 2003 Montana 2880RL. Maybe got the cart before the horse, as we have an older F-250 that had been used to pull a smaller Sunnybrook. It's a turbo-ed 6.9 with a Gear Vendor o/d. I'm thinking we'll just start with small overnights here on the Olympic Peninsula. Not retired yet, so have some time to get used to this. My 87 year old father-in-law is my coach, as they RV'ed it for quite a while. Maybe some of the info is a little outdated, but he's a wise man, and a good story teller! Chuck and Cherrie

Welcome to the forum. Lots of great people here. And very helpful to new and old alike.

That trailer has a published empty weight of about 9,500 lbs and empty hitch weight of about 2,000 lbs so you may well be fine with your F250 as long as you don't load it very heavy. Check your truck payload and tow ratings and see how they compare to the published weight numbers for that trailer.

What year is your F250? I have heard of the 7.3, 6.0, 6.4, and 6.7 engines but never a 6.9.

It's an 87. Normal aspiration from the factory, but has an after-market turbo.

I also have an older 2880 and love it. Hope it lasts forever. I pull it with an F250 6.4TD and only once did I feel it wasn't enough. You should normally have no problem. Enjoy!!

Congrats on your trailer and all it involves. I owned a 6.9 diesel one time and while it was a very good motor it was lacking in power big time. I owned a tow type trailer at the time that was 24 foot. The truck could not pull the trailer properly if you were going up a hill. it was dangerous.

Welcome aboard! Because of this forum I keep hearing good things about the older Montys. They are apparently well built. Sounds like a great place to jump into 5th wheeling.

I owned an '85 turbo 6.9 dually for a while but didn't do any heavy towing. I liked the truck, though. I had a 7.3 for 13 years with a Superchips tuner and it pulled our 5ers great.

Enjoy your new adventures!
