Replacing and Repairing Caulk

After a rainy night we woke up to wet carpet at the front of our bedroom slide. After searching here on the forum we determined that the leak was caused by missing caulk along the top of the 4" trim on the outer wall of the slide.
We aren't too experienced at repairs but we are learning. Here are our questions:
What type/brand of caulk or sealant do you folks recommend? We bought a brand called Lexel Sealant. Has anyone tried it?
Any helpful hints to make it easier to remove the old caulk?
Do you have to remove all of the old caulk and have it perfectly clean?
Thanks for your help!!

I don't know how the RV industry feels about it. but in the home building I've done the product called Flexseal is very good, and not cheap. But it stays crystal clear, and stays flexible.I will use it when the need arises.

More than likely your old caulking is silicone. If you re-caulk with anything other than silicone best to remove as much old silicone as possible. Use plastic scraper and goo gone to remove. You can re-caulk with silicone over old silicone but any other caulk silicone needs to be removed as most caulks don't adhere to silicone.
There are probably better caulks out there but silicone can be found anywhere including walmart and easy to apply.
