Motor Oil
I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado diesel 6.4L dually long box with 21K miles on it. I would like to convert the motor oil to Mobile 1 full synthetic but the Chevy garage didn't recommend doing this although they offer a synthetic oil. I'm thinking they want to promote their own synthetic oil vs. Mobile 1 synthetic. Does anyone have an opinion on using Mobile 1 synthetic good or bad? Is this logical thinking on using/switching to synthetic oil? Are there any engine warranty issues you are aware of that I should be concerned with? My neighbor swears by it but he has had only gasoline engines. I'm going to ask another Chevy garage their opinion on using Mobile 1 synthetic. Thanks for your thoughts.

Chevy demands Mobile 1 Syn in my Corvette, even has it on the oil fill cap. It is of course a gas engine. I don't think Chevy is not recommending it. My friend has a 2016 GMC 2500 Diesel and has synthetic for diesels put in at his changes.
Check your owners manual for the proper oil to use.
See if Mobile 1 is also made for diesel use.

I know Cummins only wants synthetic oil only if the mean temp is at freezing or below other than that conventional oil only. I use Rotella T

I called Mobil one time and ask when I should switch to Mobil 1 “the day you get a new vehicle”. I use Mobil 1 in every engine I own including my lawn mower. Synthetic is definitely better, it protects an engine better especially the turbo. When you turn an turbo engine off especially after it has been pulling hard and is hot the oil gums up. Synthetic doesn’t do this nearly bad as conventional oil because it is more tolerant of higher temperatures.

Synthetic is a better oil, but with diesel engines you won't gain any more miles between oil changes. The big issue with them is the soot and fuel that gets into the engine oil and it doesn't matter if the oil is regular or synthetic, you've still got to change it when the manufacturer says to. I found that out when trying to get some more miles out of a synthetic oil change but noticed it was just as black after 7k miles as the regular stuff I'd been using. A diesel mechanic told me what was going on.

As long as the oil is API CJ-4, it is OK to use. Synthetic provides better protection. By the way, your Duramax is 6.6 liter, not 6.4.

When you live in the frozen north, it is sure nice to have synthetic in the crankcase when it gets to -25 or more. The synthetic out performs dino at severe cold temp much easier to crank the engine.

I use valvoline 15w40 change it every 5K along with all filters. Last truck 998k still running strong and no oil burn. It is a 1999 5.9 litre. Seems the older trucks are more bullet proof than the new diesels. Just my 4 cents.

Maybe true in the smaller pick up engines, not so in the bigger diesels. Use the engine preheat. Rotella T is fine at all temps.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel is the only thing I've used in my 2005 Duramax and my 2011 Duramax and will be the only thing used in my ordered 2018 Duramax.
And those Trucks spent most of their lives Towing.

Do you really need synthetic oil? No, Your engine will wear out the rest of the truck.
Is synthetic oil better? No question, yes.
Will synthetic oil extend your oil change intervals? All manufacturers say no.
It’s your call. I choose synthetic.

Mobile I synthetic in wife's car. Rotella T6 synthetic in our Ford diesel.

Actually, in my owners manual is says synthetic for special weather conditions otherwise conventional diesel oil. I have a 2014 Cummins in my 2500. Is there a bigger diesel than mine available in the RAM?

Was in Tractor Supply the other day and on the back of a one gallon jug of mobile one it stated something about not being for towing or something like that, darn CR's!.

Specification
Oils designated as API CJ-4 are required for the vehicle. The CJ-4 designation can appear either alone or in combination with other American Petroleum Institute (API) designations, such as API CJ-4/SL. These letters show API levels of quality.
American Petroleum Institute (API) symbol
This doughnut-shaped logo (symbol) is used on most oil containers to help you select the correct oil. It means that the oil has been certified by the American Petroleum Institute.
Look for this on the oil container, and use only those oils that display this logo.
Caution: Use only engine oils that have the designation CJ-4 for the diesel engine. Failure to use the recommended oil can damage the DPF and result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.
Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 15W-40 viscosity grade engine oil.
When it is very cold, below −18 °C (0 °F), use SAE 5W-40 to improve cold starting. These numbers on the oil container show its viscosity, or thickness.
When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, always select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section.
Engine Oil Additives/Engine Oil Flushes — API
Do not add anything to the oil. The recommended oils with the API service symbol are all that is needed for good performance and engine protection.
Engine oil system flushes are not recommended and could cause engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.
You cannot go wrong with synthetic. My choice happens to be Royal Purple.
