Getting ready for our September trip
I am starting to plan our trip to Colorado from Calif to Nevada then thru Utah then hit hwy 70 to Colorado. not ever been on hwy 70 I would like to know if it is a fast hwy for one, and will I be doing excessive mountain climbing, a few hills are ok, you got the idea what I mean.
and if you have any sugestions for CG's throw them out there anything with full hook-ups will be welcome, I'll have to make reservations ahead.
thank you. don

We drove 70 all the way across Colorado last Oct. We took our time and enjoyed the veiws. You do have Mountains, Eisenhower Tunnel is 11,013 Ft. elevation. We had no problems with our 2002 Chevy on the grades, you should be OK. We stayed at Grand Juntion at Juntion West RV Park and visited the Colorado Monument.

Don,
If you would like to get off of I-70 and see more of Colorado. Get off at Frisco CO at the second exit and take Hwy 9 East toward Breckenridge. Breckenridge is a ski area and touristy. If you continue on through Breckenridge on Hwy 9 it will take you over Hoosier Pass to Fairplay CO. It is a beautiful drive. Hoosier Pass has several switchbacks and is about 11,000 ft. and has beautiful mountains at the top. It is not a problem. I have been over it so many times I don't pay much attention to it. You just take your time like everyone else. Semis go over it all the time.
At Fairplay you turn right for about 1 mile on 285 and then go left again on Hwy 9 to Hartsel. At Hartsel you have a choice of going straight to Colorado Springs or turn right onto Hwy 9 again and go to Canon City and the Royal Gorge. Either way you will see different parts of CO and you can still end up in Denver and I-70 again if you choose to.

If you haven't been across Nevada on Highway 50 I would recomend it. It is a two lane road but in good shape. It is supposedly the loneliest highway in America. Its not but it is not heavily traveled.
The eastern half is pretty to look at (at least I think so). I have been across it 3 or 4 times with the Montana with no problems at all.

Thanks for the comments.
Helmick was the hwy the kind that 1 mile seems like 2 in time like a tipica mountain road.
Jolu I'll look up Frisco County on my maping program thanks.
capt kidd I'll look that hwy 50 up on my maping program also, is it a 55 mph hwy or a 35-40 mph type.

We pulled all the grades around 60MPH, went down a little slower. The only thing that I did not like was some of the big rigs
coming down behind me around 70MPH.

Thanks Ron if you were going that fast it is a fast hwy, I just dint want to be on one of those mountain roads that seem to take forever to go a mile with all those turns and stuff.

Highway 50 across Nevada is a 55 or higher road. Sometimes you have to drive slower but most of the time it's 55 or better.

We have some dear friends that have taken hwy 50 and they said they could drive for many miles and not meet or have another vehicle pass them. They loved taking the out of the way highways and byways.
Enjoy and travel safely, Dennis
