Buena Vista/Aspen Colorado

As noted in a post in the "Campground" topic, we are spending a few nights at the Arrowhead Point RV Park just 5 miles North of the town of Buena Vista, Colorado.

Yesterday we drove up a rocky road to the old ghost towns of Winfield and Vicksburg. The Aspens are really beginning to change color.

Today we drove over Independence Pass to Aspen and up to the Maroon Bells.

I have put some of our photos on a web page:

David & Shirley, WOW! Your photos just reinforce why we want to travel throughout this beautiful country of ours! Thanks for sharing. I retire in 258 days (May 31st) and Dave in 278 days (June 20th) when the school year is over. Then we're into the Monty and on the road until we decide to stop. It looks like you're enjoying your trip and the beautiful scenery. Enjoy and take care! Chris

David and Shirley,

Thanks again for posting the pics! I'm jumping up and down in my chair as I can't get up there until next weekend. If this pending coldfront turns everything brown before I get there, at least I'll have your beautiful photos.

We want to try to get to Marble - which is a bit west of Aspen.

Thanks to our friend, Brad (bsmeaton) for help on our route from near Buena Vista to Estes Park. We made it through the Eisenhower Tunnel without one minutes delay. It had been down from four lanes to two and back up through the week, but all four lanes were opened this morning for the week-end. We drove up the "Peak to Peak" highway through Central City, Nederland, etc. A beautiful drive, but lots of sharp curves and up and down all the way.

We arrived here at the Spruce Lake RV Park in Estes Park shortly after noon and are all set up. We will be here through Monday night. The park advertises FREE WIFI, but on arrival were told it only works about 40% of the time. It is very slow, but working enough for us to read the forum and (we hope) to post this message.

David and Shirley,

I'm envious, I get to pick up my Monty tomorrow but I can't get out this weekend because of a little family illness going on.

David and Shirley,

Thanks for the salute and glad you didn't get delayed - much nicer drive than through the foothills!

MAC - Like you, I'm home for the weekend (Monty Grounded). I'm going to try next weekend and I sure hope it's not all brown up there! I'll just have to look at David and Shirley's pictures this year instead.

All is not lost, I'll take my son to the game so he can watch the Chiefs get STOMPED.

Brad,

Where you going next weekend? If my mom get's better we might head up to Estes ourselves, or maybe just stay down in Loveland and drive up there.

MAC,
I was actually thinking of Mueller State Park down by Divide - so when the sun goes down I can sneek in some Cripple Creek - but no set plans and I'm open.

Montana is grounded right now. Goes into Denver spring and suspension Tuesday to check shackles and axle alignment (some minor shift in axles to one side). They said they could fix it right away if there is a problem, but I won't know until Wednesday or so.

Well, my friends, this turned out to be NOT a good week end for visiting Estes Park. We have spent most of the time in our Montana keeping warm and dry. The weather may get better next week and fortunatly we had planned to stay a couple of those days anyway.

Still huge crowds on the streets.

Brad: I was at Mueller the other day. They say they're booked every weekend thru Columbus Day weekend. You could get in during the week, but get booted again on the weekend if it's all reserved. About Columbus Day they go no reservations, but also about the same time they start closing down the main campground. There are about 16 sites left open year round with no water. Going to http://ra2.reserveamerica.com/welcome.do might tell you if you have a chance for your dates or not. I wanted to go in mid-week, work in the area and spend the weekend. They said i'd probably not have too much luck.

Clyde and Deb,
Thanks for the heads up! I had a feeling they might be booked - popular campground. I may look for an alternative site. I can't commit anything until I found out if the Monty will be fixed in time for the weekend. Might just be a car trip for me.

Brad,
We are planning on spending some time late this week in Manitou Springs, then on to Woodland Park. There's Two (nice? I hope) parks there that have Wi-Fi, I haven't called them yet. Hope they have a place for us.

Ozz,
Yes - I've stayed at a private on in Woodland Park years ago. No idea what the name was, but its just a couple of blocks north of the main drag through town on the road that feeds into the mall on the south. Nice enough place - had a few fultimers in there.

Brad,

I've never stayed there before, usually we drive right through Woodland Park on our way to Cripple Creek! Looks like a nice one though.
