Front leg cleaning and maintenance (not internal gear)

Apologies if this topic has been covered. I searched, but did not find an applicable thread. I will leave maintenance of the internal landing gears to the pros, as that is beyond my skill set.

However, what about the front landing legs? I recall being told they should be kept clean from road debris, etc. I believe an oily or greasy lubricant is not recommended because it would attract/hold dirt, sand, etc.

Is lubrication of the legs recommended? What type of product should be used?

Thanks!

I know this has been discussed bur darn'd if I can find it. As I remember, at one of the Goshen rallies, Lippert changed their recommendation from using Silicone Spray to ATF to wipe off the dirt on the hydraulic legs.

Hopefully someone with a better recall will chime in shortly.

Carl is correct.
Use ATF or hydraulic fluid on a rag to wipe them down before retracting. It will add trouble free years to their life.

I was just reading this the other night. Maybe they have flipped back on their recommendation. According to the Level-Up owners manual that came with our 2021 trailer, Rev: 9.15.20, page 10, preventive maintenance, Item 4
"If jacks are down for extended periods, it is recommended to spray exposed jack rods with a dry silicone lubricant every three months for protection. If the trailer is located in a salty environment, it is recommended to spray the rods every four to six weeks"
Unless they changed their minds since last September.
Probably good either way.

MandK, I remember that, now that I see it again. Thanks!

Carl n Susan, thanks. I’m guessing ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid?

I whip mine down with silicone spray, spray it on a rag first.

ATF is automatic transmission fluid, also hydraulic fluid, either will work.
I usually will spray WD-40 on a rag and wipe the rod to clean any debris, then use PTFE Dry Lube to spray down the rods themselves. The dry lube does not attract dirt and dust like ATF or silicone spray.

Can I use the gear lube for my slideout rack?

Yes, spray PTFE lube into the gear axle.

Download the Lippert NOW app from Google play store. It has all the manuals in there.
For hydraulic slide maintenance document ccd_0001617
You only need to lubricate the gear axle.

Here's a great video on lubricating slides and jacks.

The cylinder rod is exposed to hydraulic fluid when retracted. Therefore a wipedown using hydraulic fluid is compatible with the rest of the components, namely the rubber seals. An ever so slight coating of fluid will protect a cylinder rod during extended periods. A wipedown of a dirty rod just prior to retracting it is good maintenance.
