2022 Montana 3871

Good morning I am a new member and new to the fifth wheel community

I could use some help
My 3781RL is set up for a gen set but I can’t find the factory recommendation
I was considering a portable Honda 3300
But my wife wants the factory option
any thoughts from the group would be appriciated

It depends how you will use your rig, where you use it and your pocketbook. If you are living in the south and boondock and want to run AC, probably factory gen set. We camp in the mountains a lot and boondock. If our solar doesn’t recharge because of clouds, we use a Honda 2000 to top off batteries. Traveling to Alaska in 2023, we’ll take one of our two Hondas.

If you have the factory generator prep, it is set up for a propane powered Onan generator. Probably the model RV-QG-400 or similar which costs close to $5,000. I have a Predator 3500 portable inverter generator that rides in the bed of the truck forward of the hitch. I connect my regular power cable (with a 30 amp/ 50 amp adapter) and run it from the truck bed unless we are staying somewhere that I need to pull it out.
One plus from this option is you can use the generator for other needs if that applies to you. We've used ours on several occasions when the power was out at our home to keep the refrigerator and freezer running for example.
The Predator is under $1000 from Harbor Freight. Check YouTube for reviews. Honda is always a great choice but more expensive for the equivalent output.

I've always had a built in Onan. This is the 3rd trailer my 3600 LPG has been in. Love it and bullet proof. $3600 used on EBAY.

Fuel consumption with propane can be annoying, and more trouble to refill. Champion makes a great gen set, way cheaper than Onan.

Most or almost all Chinese Honda clone generators are made by Loncin generator. I have two a Harbor Freight 2000 watt and a 3500 watt. I also have a Honda 3000 watt and an Onan. They are all fine generators except for the Onan. I just got a bad one in my Motor Home. I’m sure most aren’t like mine.
I use the Honda for the Montana. I have a receptacle in the front of my camper with the generator in the front of my truck and a short extension cord. Works great. I have the 3500 watt Harbor Freight Predator mounted semi permanent on the back of the MH. It to works great, much better than the Onan I had. It’s quieter and vibrates less. If you decide to go with a generator be sure it’s a true sine wave unit. You will probably need a soft start. They are either wired directly on your AC or now you can get one that will plug in to a generator.

I run a WEN 56380i Super Quiet 3800-Watt RV-Ready Portable Inverter Generator. Runs everything well and is mounted in left rear corner of pickup box. I get at least 8-9 hours under load on a full tank of gas. Has been a great unit for boon docking as I sit here on Magnolia Beach, Port Lavaca, TX.

Thanks to the solar package I run my gen about an hour a day so not much propane usage. And upgrading to 40lb LPG tanks I can boon dock for a week.
