Always something!

Well, last year our toilet entertained us with a sticking water valve that caused the toilet to fill up and overflow...now the waste ball seal is not holding water...can't win! We ordered the Thetford "kit" to deal with this matter, but the "kit" did not contain "everything" needed to do the job (what, no grease?). Will have to contact Thetford to determine if a substitute "grease" can be used to complete the job. By the way, the March 2012 issue of Trailer Life mag has a "how-to" article on how to change out the waste ball seal...just to make sure we are paying attention, they seem to have mixed up the text with supporting pictures! Like I said, always something...but at least for us, it is something in our summer home in Maine!!!

Any silicone based grease will work. Do not use petroleum based. Super Lube is as good as any. You can buy it at most automotive stores and even Ace hardware. Super Lube

Yes make sure it grease for o-rings. Or it will destroy the rubber.

Isn't vaseline petroleum based? It has the faintest odor of oil and it's always said "petroleum jelly". While it works now, it might eventually create a problem with the rubber rings.

Plumber's silicone grease works great. Any hardware or big box store of that type carries it.

Thanks everybody! I called Thetford yesterday and the very nice customer service rep informed me that Thetford no longer included the grease with the repair kit...she went on to say that any "silicon based" grease would do the job...just as you folks have said. Couldn't get to the job yesterday (had to bring Camilla to the doctor's office), but this morning I tackled the job...the version of the toilet we have is a little different than the one refered to in the Trailer Life mag article and the one referred to in Thetford's directions, but all went pretty well! We now have a working toilet. Again, thanks for your responses.

Super Lube or Dow 111 are the best product to use. They are both used on o rings.
I have used them both for years on the toilet seal and at work pump orings, valve seals.

You are right Art, Vaseline is petroleum based. However I have used it for years on rubber o-rings, such as those on my water filter housings, and have never noticed any deterioration.
