Is this normal?
My new 3295RK has a Sealand toliet. When water is caught in the bowl after a flush, it quickly leaks out (less than 5 minutes). The water is not running, thank goodness, so the tank isn't filling prematurely.
I would have thought that water would stay in the toliet bowl without leaking. My Search failed to bring up a discussion of this, and the owners manuel is silent as well.
Is my toliet operating normally?
Thanks
Gene

I don't have the Sealand toilet, but have a friend who has one. I noticed with theirs that after flushing, it wouldn't seal when it was new. After more use and not "riding" the pedal back up (holding your foot on the pedal while it closes), the seal began to work better. If you just let your foot off the pedal quickly after flushing, I think you'll find that the water will remain in the bowl. Try it, it worked for my friend when I showed him.

In addition to the above recommendation, there might be some small bit of dirt or debris trapped in the groove of the seal...try cleaning with a Q-tip or Popsicle stick. (while wearing rubber gloves, of course). Be REAL careful to NOT drop the cleaning "tool" down the drain while using it...bigger problems would then occur.
There was a Forum thread about cleaning the seal a few weeks? month? ago.

Had a similar problem once and applied Vaseline to the seal. Similar to the previous cleaning suggestion.

We have the same problem with our Sealand in the '06 2955. It only will seal if the foot valve is allowed to snap back to closed. Since this splashes we now flush with the lid closed!
The manual suggests that there may be some adjustment but so far haven't taken the time to disassemble and investigate. I'll save this chore for spring.

We had the same problem with the same toilet. Tried cleaning it with no success. Our dealer replaced the seal under warranty and we have had no further problems with it. The original seal did not appear to be properly aligned. Maybe someone got in too big of a hurry during assembly.

Ours behaves similarly. As others have suggested, lifting up briefly on the foot pedal after a flush seems to cause the valve to close more tightly. Real problem is probably a defective seal, but it has not been enough of a problem to convince me to do anything about it yet.

Ours did the same thing for about three or four days when it was new. Then it cured itself and has sealed properly ever since. Some wise correspondents on this forum suggested that the seal was probably dry when we purchased the unit. A few days of use allowed the seal to re-hydrate. That sounds like a logical explanation for our experience.

Another possible solution is a drop or two of baby oil in the flush from time to time. I suspect vegetable oil or even olive oil would work as well but I haven't tried those.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. THe Sealand manual also says to let the foot pedal snap up which is not what I did the first couple days. We will let that baby snap! This is just day 5 so perhaps it will heal itselt with a little more time. If not, I'll put on the rubber gloves. Thanks again for everyone"s help.

Final report. My problem was fixed by the dealer under warrenty. The seal had to be replaced.
Thanks again to all who replied.

You show extraordinary patience in waiting from November to February. You sure gave it a fair chance to heal itself. Glad all is well now. Happy RVing....

We had the same problem when unit was new and used Vaseline and no more problems!
That is good they replaced it. You should be fine now.
