Reese 16 K slider

Hello everyone,
We're the folks from Folsom who recently purchased an 06 2995 Monty. We have a 2500 Duramax 4WD short bed to haul it with. We have not installed our hitch yet. When we purchased the 5th wheel we were offered a like new Reese 16K slider for only $400 [removed from the other 5th wheel owner's vehicle]. We have not paid for or taken that hitch yet. So yesterday I met someone who has a Raptor 32'. We started discussing hitches and he told me to purchase any other hitch, but DO NOT INSTALL ANY REESE SLIDER! He said he had his first 16K slider replaced because the slide would disengage during acceleration and braking and slam his vehicle around. When Reese replaced the 16k with a 22K. He said it worked fine for about 5000 towing miles and then the same thing occured! He called Reese again and they recommended a bungie cord to hold the slider lever secure. I know this all sounds weird, but I need any input ya'll can give me to avoid this potential situation. I really don't like to knock any specific products, but if true this would be not just unacceptable-but also a safety issue.
Thanks so much,

Jim and Kathy

I am using a reese slider hitch pulling our 2950RK 5th wheel since 2005 with no problem what so ever. Maybe the installation was off center where the locking pawls did not engage all the way. Or maybe the tension spring that holds the lever in position was weak. I believe the correct install should not give you any problems.

I agree with racerjoe, I've had mine for 3 years. If not installed right it would cause problems.
I had to loosen the rails and re tighten to square them up.
has worked fine ever since.

I have been towing since 2001 with the Reese 16k slider and never had the slider mechanism come loose like you described. As a matter of fact, I've never even used the slider on my hitch. I would purchase another Reese slider hitch if I needed one, but probably would go for 18k on my next truck!
I also have a s/b GMC like you.

Thanks to all of you for your information. Since I am a pretty technical person [especially automotive]-your Reese confidence and troubleshooting ideas made all the sense to me. I would agree that the person who had all the trouble with his Resse [the one who gave me the horror stories] was either inflating the story or he had not done his hitch installation homework.

Thanks again,

Jim and Kathy in Folsom, CA

Jim,

Our 16K slider has never let go in 5 years of service.

Just remember to give a shot of lube to the slide rails and rollers and the lock springs each time you hook up. They have a tendancy to rust up when exposed to the car wash, rain, and even the mag choloride on the winter roads. More than once I thought it was locked only to find out it was just stuck. There is no worse sound in the world than the "KAWHAM" you hear as that 8-ton Montana hits the back of those slide rails just short of ripping your tailgate off. After the third time picking my teeth up off the dashboard I learned to always give it a shot of lube before using the slide.

Had the same setup on mine 3 years now. No problems. Brad's darn right about a shot of lube now and then to keep it freed up. Mine needs it once or twice a year, even with a bed cover on most of the time.

I've been using this Reese 16k slider for the entire five years of our fulltiming. That's roughly 100,000 or more miles of towing.

Sounds to me like that guy with the problems didn't read the manual about how to properly operate the slider.

I have the Reese 18K Signature Series slider and it has a safety pin that you insert and it prevents it from accidently sliding. I guess the the 16K regular slider must not have that feature.

I HAVE OWNED A RESSE 16K SLIDER HITCH AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS WITH IT IN 2 YEARS OF USE. PRIOR TO THE MONTANA FIVER I OWNED 3 PULL BEHINDS AND USED THE REESE HITCH ON ALL OF THEM. MAKE SURE THAT IF YOU HAVE A SHORT BED TRUCK THAT YOU GET A SLIDER.

Reese now has a acuator that is remote controlled from the cab that operates the lever to let the slide move or stay where it is. The price $323.00 thats better than a super slide. You can slide and still disconnect at an angle.

The acuator is not on reeses web site. It is being manufactured as we speak and will be available end of Jan. or first of Feb. I found it in RVEXTREME mag 10 times better than trailer life. Cost is $323.00. Remote mounts in truck and acuator mounts on existing reese hitch. Phone no. 888-521-0510 800-632-3290.

Re the question about how the 16k locks the slider. The lever has a lock position that works as advertised. If one does not put the lever in the fully locked position, then it would be possible for the slider to slide. It's a really simple matter to see at a glance that it's in the locked position.
