Tie down your awning?

I see people at campgrounds that tie down their awning and leave it that way. I would be afraid of doing that for fear of a gust of wind breaking something. Am I off base here or is this not a valid concern?

I don't think you are off base at all. I've had the same opinion when I see them. Any time we are away and it even looks like the weather is going to get bad, I pull ours in. Too expensive and too easy to prevent no to take action.

I see that often and have wanted to do it but I have the same fear of a nasty storm popping up and destroying the awning. We camp right on the ocean at Assateague State Park every year. It gets windy there a lot. Last year I had the truck tail gate down and tri-fold tonnue cover closed but unlatched. A gust of wind came and fully opened the cover in a second

I would never tie down one of these “new” style motorized awnings that come on our Montanas. I used to tie down my old-school manual Dometic awnings all the time. I had “de-flapper” attachments on the sides. Those awnings have the ability to resist winds better...but I remember many nights going out in a sudden storm to put the awning up.

I get why people would want to tie down the awning. But I would never do it even if I was there to monitor it. It boils down to, I'm not going to watch it 24/7. It only takes a minute or two to bring them in if we leave for any reason even on a calm day. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Simple. 2 minutes will not kill you or your plans. JHMO.

Used to on one of our older trailers with the manual owning. Left tied down, we were gone, water filled the awning and warped the tube. Damage might have been worse but some unknown camper brought in the awning for us. Never again.

Done it both ways. Prefer no straps now.

I use too do that but with the new Montana I don't. I have the auto roll back on my when the wind picks up the go in automatically. So if wwe are gone i don't have to worry

It's all good until that function doesn't work when you're gone.

That feature sounds nice , I wonder what happens while its starting to roll up ,and the gust of wind gets it before its rolled up, no I won't leave mine down when gone .

I have used that method numerous times with good results. Used the auger type from Camping world when the ground is soft enough or 5 gal bucket filled 1/2 full and anchor to the handle. If the wind comes up extra strong then we roll up the awning.

We tie ours down, but only extend it if we’re going to be sitting under it.. Almost lost one in Albuquerque one time when the wind came up suddenly.

We occasionally tie ours down, but are ready to bring in the awning whenever winds above 17mph are predicted.

Ours is older. Use dog stake, spring, smaller tie down & dog collar. Spring absorbs light wind. If bad weather comes, we lower awning & just unsnap dog collar to reel in

We tie ours down from time to time, but won't leave the rig like that.

I’m old school
Mechanical awning Are best
simple and it works
Handles mid grade winds
I tie it down in heavy winds At the beach or bring it in.. pretty simple in my book and less maintenance.

Love technology but hate the electric awnings with auto retract That have a mind of there own.. Pulling fuses Or removing power to the control unit to defeat auto retract is silly.. I spend too much time outdoors to have it retract when I don’t want it to

Was in South Padre Island last year and watched 2 awnings literally get ripped off the rigs. They tied down their awnings and a front came through and in seconds they were gone. Mine was open but got it in just in time. When we are done for the night or going out leaving the rig, I always stow the awning. Too easy to put it in or out. To expensive to be lazy.

I'm one that if I'm not in the campsite, my awning gets retracted until I return. We've tied it down while there, but we never leave it extended and tied down. It's too expensive to fix or replace just because we didn't want to take the time to roll it back up.
