Dutch Ovens
Do any of my fellow MOCers use a cast iron Dutch Oven for fun cooking? We are on the hunt for favorite recipes. My sister in-law make an apple crisp to die for during the fall season but we would like to find something to compete with her this year.

Do a search for LSDOS - Lone Star Dutch Oven Society.
We have any recipe you could want on our site.
We cook couple times a month as a group and do demos.
We are at the Fall Montana Rally in Goshen now and will be heading to DeGray State Park in Arkansas after this for the National Dutch Oven Gathering. (search: NDOG 2013)

I do a pot roast in mine. I put some oil in the pot and pour mushroom soup over it then put Lipton onion soup over it. When I put the second batch of charcoal on I put the potatoes and carrots around the meat and about the last 10 minutes I put in peas. Our Friend really enjoy it.
We then make a Peach cobbler after for dessert. I use the peach juice to mix into the cake mix instead of what is called for on the instructions.

Take a look at http.//www.camp-cook.com/
It is a Dutch oven forum and has a recipe section. It does for DO cooking what this forum does for Montana owners.

I use mine a lot. I even use it on the propane grill to cook roasts, cobbler, dump cake and anything you cook in an oven

OH yes, we use a Dutch oven in campfires. Here's our fool-proof Dump cake recipe:
Ingredients:
-large can of fruit (i.e. peaches) - NOT pie filling
-yellow cake mix
-mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon, rolled oats
-stick of butter, cold, cut into small pieces
Directions:
-Dump can of fruit onto bottom of Dutch over.
-Dump cake mix on top of fruit.
-Dump sugar/cinnamon/oatmeal mixture.
-Dump (drop) butter pieces on top, scattered around.
Cover, cook for about 45-minutes, until done. Serve hot and maybe dump some ice cream on top.
YUM!!

Thanks for the links and the recipes. I knew that the MOC would have some Dutch Oven experts lurking our there. We are new to this style of cooking and so far we are having fun with it. That Dump Cake recipe may be just the thing to compete with my sister in-law's apple crisp on our Columbus day outing. :-)

I love the dutch oven along with the fun of cooking in it, I have stoped using mine because of the fear of a ember flying off and starting a fire, I guess a wind shield could solve that problem so long as the ranger allows fires or charcole in there campground.
anybody have the recipe for the wagon wheel breakfast in a dutch oven? it was a favorate for our Boy Scout troop years ago.
