Aux Fuel tanks
How do you in-bed aux tank owners tie in to your main tank? I'm thinking about through the vent tube instead of the main feed! Thoughts pro and con? Thanks.

I have a Tractor Supply 71gal tank/tool box combo secured with a couple of turnbuckles. I just use a manual hand pump and hose. It is a very simple setup, works good for me, and the whole thing can be easily removed once emptied.

I tied mine into the filler tube with a tee kit with a check valve. This allows you to gravity fill the main tank and not overfill. I think the tee kit is about $60 or so. Sometimes I fill as I drive if I forget to add fuel at a stop along the way.
You might check out Northern Tool for tanks and tees.

I run a 50 gallon auxillary tank with a 3/8" ball valve for shut off at the tank. I then ran 3/8 fuel hose to a standard electric fuel pump and a solenoid shut off all 12 volt located under the floor of the box, left front. From the pump discharge we then plumbed into the vent line with a "T". Electrical is tied into the right rocker switch "lighted" on the lower dash of the cab. Syatem works like a charm!

I have a 51 gal RDS tank/tool box combo that I purchased through Northern Tool. Also ordered the install kit for my truck (model and year specific) that is gravity feed through a "rollover" check valve that is part of a T-fitting that you install in-line with the main fuel fill tube. You can keep the aux tank valve open all the time, or only when you drive. The "rollover" check valve will keep from over filling the tank. Works great.

OK, let me digress. In my 250, I had an RDS combo with 12v pump wired to my upfitter switch and it was plumbed (RDS kit) into my main filler line. My question is does anyone see a problem using the vent line instead of the main filler line. I really don't want to cut the OEM filler neck and 1 1/4" hose to install the kit.

I don't think that using the vent is a good idea. I believe that the vent line allows air to the tank. On my old 6.5 '93 chevy turbo diesel, I had the vent line plug up for some reason. The dealer thought it may have been ice. Anyway, the truck quit and had to be towed to the dealer. They found that the fuel tank had actually been sucked it and partially collapsed. Never heard of that. I have 35 mm pictures somewhere. Use the filler neck. Transfer flow has some kind of "T" that installed on my filler neck to feed from the bed to the tank.

Served us well on a number of 09 trucks plus the older ones by teeing into the vent tube. That tube can handle a lot of volume as it is designed to handle tank volume increase when fiiling with high volume nozzles (I am talking about Fords here). The small volume of flow with an electric fuel pump into the vent line from the auxillary tank will not affect the venting of the system. If it did, the fuel what burp to the top of the line with no harm done. The large filler pipe actually acts as a vent when you are not refuelling as both inlets are normally at the highest point on the tank. When fuel flow from auxillary tank is shut off the vent is in a normal status. Sorry, but I disagree with the above statements on not to tie into the vent tube.

I just had a 45 gal in-bed tank installed it has its own pump and when the OEM tank goes to 1/4 tank left it will pump into the main tank . If you need to know the company PM me and I will send the info. Its approved in all States... Happy Trails....

as for securing the tank down I used turn buckels to the original tie downs in the bed of the truck bed.
As for getting the fuel into the tank I use a 12 Volt DC, filtered, screw in fuel pump, from Northern Tool, the reason I use a pump is I can see what the fuel looks like when I pump it into the main tank I wont have any water or particles that seem to accumalate in transfer tanks.

Transfer Flow automatic setup. Hooked into the main fill pipe. Fuelgauge lets me know where I'm at in conjunction with the OD. Have a range in excess of 600 miles with a shortbed truck if towing all the time. Fuel filter in the line from the Aux. tank to the main, plus usual filter on the engine. No problems in 3 years of usage. I also use the truck for a transport business.

90 gal tank tool box combo with 12 volt pump on box. If I need to empty tank can do so. Hard to empty direct feed if you should have to. 5vr clears the pump. Works great for me.
