Extended Warranty

We're told we can purchase an extended rv protection plan on our new Montana for $1950.00 for 4 years,$2470 for 7 years. My question is, are they worth the price or would I be better off saving the money and doing needed repairs myself? (I've been quite friendly with tools all my life).

It's a crap shoot and what is good for me may not be good for all. The first year of the unit is already covered by the manufacturer's warranty so why buy it in the first year. Like you I'm pretty good at fixing things. Based on that I passed on an extended! After 7 years, 45,000 miles, and about 450 nights in the rig it has been the right choice for us. Only had one repair for $300. I paid out of pocket but most extended warranty's would have covered. Good luck with your decision. Jim

Depends if you want to roll the dice and have cash on hand to be able to fix something like a refer if goes out, ours is a 4 door and cost $3,500 and it would hurt to lay out that kind of cash quickly so for us it is a good insurance policy that they just rolled into the loan when I bought it just DON'T forget to have them START the extended warranty AFTER the 1 year mfg is up

Dick, it seems as we get older some of us get "extended warranties".

Having said, look at the cost of some of your options on your new rig, how long you plan to keep that rig and that ever looming "piece of mind".

It's really a personal choice. Your 4 year offer seems reasonable but you could do more shopping as well on extended warranties. Good Luck on a tough decision.

Our rig is now almost 2yrs old and have not used it. But....had a couple of very expensive items go out on our previous Cougar TT and it more than paid for itself. So I opted for the piece of mind.

My unit is two years old - I just purchases 7 years coverage for less than $1800 from Warehouse Warranties (Stacy)
Someone just said the four door refrig is $3500 to replace.
I like the peace of mind of the insurance.

Mine is just now pay up $985 for a split rear galley tank and now gonna pay to fix the furnace fan. Even though I am handy it is nice not to have to mess with tanks and the wiring on these things. Gonna cost me a $100 deductable today.

As mentioned it is all personal choice. We have always had one, and on our current model, it covers the on-board genny, fridge, microwave, ac units, television, etc. Our choice was a plan with a $50 deductible, just to provide peace of mind in the event of an expensive repair. We also have always purchased them from our local dealer since we know they will honor the plan and act accordingly. If it is a local dealer where most of your repairs will be done, my thoughts are to ask how long they have been dealing with the respective "warranty company". In addition, read the plan fully so you understand what is not covered. If you are on the road primarily, I would think something like Good Sam's would be your best bet. I will say our 7 year plan (really only six after manufacturers warranty), only ran about $1800 a couple of years ago, evidently inflation hits these plans hard.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. The warranty companies are in business to make money. If they didn't make money on the sale of extended warranties they wouldn't sell them or they would be so expensive you and I wouldn't buy them. It used to be that you could pretty well depend on things lasting--like Sears used to sell products "good, better, and best." The best products would outlast the good products. Having said that, we have opted for extended warranties on almost everything we have purchased, from computers to RVs. So far we have come out ahead. We have had more than enough failures to make the warranties pay for themselves. We presently enjoy the piece of mind that comes through having Good Sam's Continuing Service Plan which is a warranty against failure of major parts of the RV. It has also paid for itself.

We opted for the ESP plan thru Good Sam. It's not all that much, but covers everything that originally came on the RV. There is a deductable and we have only used it once.

We have always rolled the dice, and have never lost. Over the years, no significant problems I could not fix myself and have never had to replace any major component. As indicated however, one blown refrigerator would recoup the cost. As aptly put, a roll of the dice.

We bought a 6 year plan in 2006 with our new Monty. It paid for itself after about 3 years. We traveled extensively--Alaska, most of the 50 states, eastern Canada--so lots of miles. I would buy one again--even though the first one was my wife's decision! As a retired engineer, I can figure how most stuff works but I can't buy replacement parts for much less than the warranty company can. It worked for us.

Purchased a 7 year ($50 deductible) warranty from Warehouse Warranties when the Montana was 1 year old (Oct 2010), so it is good until the Montana is 8 years old (Oct 2017). I believe the cost was $1,250 if I remember correctly.

Haven't used it yet. I had problem with no Hot Water, called them and ask if I could use a mobile RV repair, and they said that would be fine, as long as they had a business license. The mobile guy was booked and couldn't come out for 3-4 days. I turns out I had the bypass still on from filling the water heater before we left.

A split galley gray tank and a bad furnace circuit board all at the same time this week all repaired for the same $100 deductable. That is about $1700 of repair bills so well on our way to making our money back on the warranty. But like I said I would be happy if I never made a cent back and never had a problem, but that is a dream world lol lol

A wise dealer once told me that if you plan to use it a lot in its first year, don't buy the extended warranty. The reason is if anything is going to break or fail, it will be in that first year on the manufacturer's dime. Otherwise you might consider it if you are a light user.

We purchased a 7 yr. $100.00 deductible warranty just to have the piece of mind. But ours stipulated that if you didn't use it you would get your cost of the policy back at the end of the 7 yrs. First of all we live in ours fulltime so I don't really ever see the chance of getting my money back. I am sure in 7 yrs. there will be more than one reason to use it.

This a very good point. Extended warranties do not pay for repairs covered under the manufacturers warranty or insurance. We did not purchase our Extended warranty til about 9 months had gone by and the usual things had failed and been repaired by the manufacturer. However we did still get our money out of the extended warranty and we have one f or the new Big Sky..Believe me there are plenty of expensive things to fail.

This question is like "What is the best oil?" or "What are the best tires?" Opinions abound. All I can say is read the plan carefully BEFORE you buy it. Good luck!
