Don't know which way you are coming on US 50, but obviously you would turn north on US 24 at Salida/Poncha Springs. We have made that drive both ways from Buena Vista on 24 to I-70 several times--most recently coming FROM Glenwood Springs to Buena Vista towing our 34' fifth-wheel. I consider this a normal route without any problems.

You will pass the old Fort Hale remains--where the "ski troops" were trained during the Second World War. We have stopped there for a picnic meal. This is between Leadville and I-70 on US 24.
