Taxes????

I have a job as a camp ground host for 5 months out of the year. I get free rent with all my hooked up as part of my pay. Because i am not a full timer (12 months) can I still clam my trailer as a second home? Also do I need to clam the free rent as income?

Does the campground issue you a 1099?

Ask your accountant. If there is any way I would claim it. If the IRS don't like it they aren't going to shoot you, just make you pay it back.

Don't forget possible penalties. Wise advice to seek professional advise on claiming as 2nd home (but I believe it would be a legitimate claim).

It's been a few year since I worked as a tax preparer, but I think a 2nd home has to have sleeping quarters, a bath and galley, most RVs and bigger boats used to count

Based on past experience you'd be fine and you don't need to report the free rent, but definitely talk to an accountant. Things change all the time, both federal and state, and you don't want to get caught in a "It used to be ok" situation.

You can deduct the interest on your primeury home and a second home. The RV would qualafi as a second home. As for your free rent as long as it is not on the 1099 you need not clame it as income. (This is up for debate as the IRS may not agree). As for the income on the 1099 that has to be reported on SCH C so that it is subject to SE (self-employment) tax. Generally speaking any amount over $400.00 goes on SCH-C. But as this is a temp job (under 181 days) you can deduct living expense. Ask your account what the perdien is in the city where you are employed and that is the amount you would use for the living expense.

Ok the disclammer. I have been in the tax business for 22 years and this is how I would handle a client doing what you are doing. So please consult your account.
