Carpets in the Montanas

We have a 2003 3495RK that we love- except for one thing. The carpet is so light that we need to have it cleaned way too often. I keep wondering why Keystone doesn't use a commercial grade carpet in the rigs. They don't look like the old indoor-outdoor carpets anymore and with the wear and tear the rigs take it would be much easier to keep clean and wear better. Something in the tweeds would also help to keep the spots from being such an eyesore!

I agree with you, we have the same year 3295RK and the beige carpet gets dirty very easily. You will see carpet in some other rigs that look like it would hold up much better, mostly in Motorhomes. I wish they would have an option to upgrade the carpet.

We saw the cheap carpets in the light color a problem as well, so we bought rugs for the travel areas, steps included, it really helped.

When I ordered my unit, I ordered extra carpet, wallpaper, border and recliner upholstery fabric (just in case). Anyway, I measured and cut some portions of the carpet and took it to a local carpet dealer who bound the edges. They blend in with the carpet and I put them in certain areas like in front of the fridge and bed/bath area which is used often. Carpet still looks new throughout. I don't wear my outdoor shoes inside and have some good step and entry carpet that really cleans your shoes. It's been a year so far living in the unit full-time (rain, sleet, snow), and no stains or spots no nothing.

We use carpet savers in the lower level. They don't move once they are laid and they can be washed very easy.
We used the scatter rugs and they walked all over the place so a friend told us about these and they really work.

We purchased a 5x8 peice of bound carpet for the living area. We also use rugs in the kitchen area, steps and bedroom. I think this helps alot to keep the carpet clean. We always take our shoes off before entering onto the carpet.

We use extra carpet like Ozz. They use the carpet that's there because it's cheap...FOLLOW THE MONEY!

awaywego - what do you meen by carpet savers -

I got so tired of our runners walking - currently I have some Carpet Mask down in the walkway by the counter and then stuck carpets down with some carpet tape. (You usually see Carpet Mask in new trailers to protect the carpet - it is a clear plastic)
Only the carpet tape is so strong I can't get the rugs up without tearing the rubber backing off.

The carpet in our Montana's is not the best and not the worst. Is there better..sure..the Big Sky has better carpet and pad..at a price. The bad thing is that every area in a camper is a high traffic area so the carpets take a beating. We use runners, area carpet, etc.It has been the same in every camper we have owned.

Since I replied to this subject we have been looking at new Montys and have seen carpet in some of the new 5er's that look like it would stay cleaner looking. It was a mixture of lighter and darker browns and looked much better than what we presently have.

We've got a side bath mountaineer, I knew the carpet from the door to the bath would take the biggest beating so my very first upgrade was hardwood floors from the door landing up to our sliding bedroom door. It solved the wear problem and makes the coach look much richer inside.

Rocky 2,
Here is the website for Carpet Saver. http://www.carpetsaver.com/
They are foam back fabric that will not walk and they are washable. Make sure you do not use fabric softner on them. They are sold by the foot.
