Mt. Rushmore / Black Hills / Rapid City SD area?

Hi Forum,

We're going full-time on Memorial Day and traveling from Southern Orange County California to Minneapolis to see the adult children.

Since this is our inaugural voyage, we will be going through the Mt. Rushmore area at absolute prime time high season in Mid July. Just the way it worked out. (Next year we will be in Northwest at this time.)

We would like the best value recommendation for either a week or 4 nights if no 1 week discount is available.

50 AMP would be desirable with our hookups.

Already, more that 2 months ahead, many areas are sold-out, so I understand time is of the essence.

Any one have a great suggestion?

Thank you very much.
Brett

We have reservations at Custers Gulch RV Park in Custer, SD for 6/13 thru 6/19 (6 nights) and cost was just over $200. We chose this park based on recommendation of other people.

at this point get whatever you can get..... price should be a non issue at this time since everyone will be there.

Rafter J Bar in Hill City SD. The best park in the area in my opinion. We were there over the 4th of July several years ago.

Thank you for the replies!

David & Sharon Mansell: We successfully booked 5 nights July 24-29 at Custer’s Gulch, and got a 10% Escapees rate even though it’s peak season. Total of $193.50. I'm very happy with that cost. Thank you for that recommendation.

Mazboy: Very good advice. I am so glad I called today. We got the LAST back-in spot they had. (There was one pull-through spot available still as well.)

I’m pretty happy I asked the forum. Thanks again!

Custer's Gulch is a good CG, we were parked at the exact same spot as shown in old photos as was Custer's soldiers.

Stayed at Custer's Gulch for 2 weeks in both the summer of '06 and '07. Great park and easy access to all the black hills attractions. We rode motorcycles throughout the area on both stays.

We've used the Mt. Rushmore KOA. It's probably one of the largest KOA's in the system.

Yes it becomes its own city during tourist season, but it has all the amenities you'd want, including bus rides to the Mt. Rushmore Memorial to watch the sunset and then the night lighting of the statues, a very unique perspective on this icon.

Hi Brett and Cheri...

Wishing you a wonderful time on your first trip!

"Monty" spent a week in South Dakota the summer of 2012... we loved every minute there and hope you do too.

We're glad to see that you've discovered how helpful the folks on the MOC forum can be.

Safe travels,

Kathy & Jim

Been so long ago I don't remember cg specifics, but don't miss the lighting ceremony at Mt. Rushmore or Bear Country in Rapid City.
