BIRDS

Jacksonville, FL Birds

I’m not a birder but I sure do have a lot of bird pictures from all around the country. I’ll bet a lot of others do to.

One day while parked at the American Legion RV Park at Jacksonville, FL I went out to walk over and get a news paper and found this large flock of white Ibis foraging around. The brown ones are juveniles.

We have lots of birds here. From humming birds to bald eagles. We have many blue bird houses. Blue birds and tree swallows use them.

Wish I had taken a picture at an RV park on top of Raton Pass a few yrs ago. Someone had 6 or 8 hummingbird feeders hanging, bird at every station, and an uncountable number hovering around waiting for an opening. Like a swarm of bees. Have never seen that many hummers in one place before, or since.

Here is a pic from Valdez, AK. I thought I had one of blackbirds chasing an eagle carrying a fish while flying around, but apparently it got deleted.
The RV Park was on the coast and a lot of people fishing. So there was an area where fishermen cleaned their catch and just dumped the guts on the ground. The eagles and other birds would swoop in and carry stuff away.

Millie, Ranger and I live to chase tasty birds.

It is starting to get a little warm in AZ now so Ranger is getting most of his training at sunrise.

Bird hunting! You can’t do that here anymore. When I was a kid we had several coveys we could hunt walking out of our house. We could here the quail calling from our porch in the spring and never imagined some day they would all be gone. We have deer, bear, and turkey that we didn’t have then and sadly no quail.

3 juvenile California condors under the Navajo pedestrian bridge on rt 89A at Marble canyon, Colorado River crossing in AZ. I thought they were 3 buzzards. Showed the picture to the park ranges. They got very excited asked me exactly where this was. Told me they were California Condors.
Who knew???

They are Small Munsterlanders which is a German pointing breed. They are a lot like Brittanies with tails.

Conway, NH

Found these little Mallard ducklings foraging on the bank of one of those little clear water ponds on NH-153 near Conway, NH.

Their parents were real excide with us for getting this close to their ducklings for pictures but the chicks never paid much attention to them or us.

CalandLinda, I live at the beach in Jacksonville, FL. If you want to see Ibis and other birds, come to Atlantic Beach Country Club. They are everywhere down here.

We have a 15 month old Epagneul Breton aka French Brittany. She will run all day with the GSPs and English Pointers here in south Georgia during the winter but really slows down when the weather heats up. We will start traveling with her this year.

Speaking of birds. Yesterday morning we got on the road (towing the Monty), a rural 2 lane hwy, and out of the ditch a pair of mallards flew. One of them bounced off the corner of the windshield, not sure if it bounced up and hit the front cap or even if it flew away. Did not see anything in the mirrors back behind us.

Lynwood,

AZ is probably the best state in the country for quail. We have 4 huntable species plus one that is endangered.

One time while parked at Yuma for a couple of the winter months, there were always some doves hanging around. I got some smallish finch seeds and sprinkled them around on the ground under one of our bedroom windows. It didn’t take those doves a day to find the seeds. I got some nice pictures of them and this is one of them.

In recent years we have begun seeing those collared doves along with white wing doves in this area of north Texas. Had always only been mourning doves before those began to appear.

I just love it when the birds get their full summer colors. Here are a couple of finches we have around all the time. A male Gold Finch and A red House Finch with his mate.

Muscovy ducks are found throughout all Florida waters and lowlands. I filmed these in the Cedar River.

The country folks raise and eat these hardy ducks. The meat is said to taste much like roast beef. The eggs are described as delicious. An adult female may produce as many as 150 eggs a year. They are not endangered nor are they a game bird.

Muscovy's can cross-breed with wild Mallards.

Once while traveling the CA costal highway, we stopped at a beautiful seaside park at San Simeon. There was a fishing/sight seeing pier and while out there taking pictures a huge flock of Brown Pelicans were feeding on some surface fish.
