Here is what we use. this system has a support rod combined with the tie down prevents damage from up drafts and down drafts. Unless you are dealing with winds pf 35mph or highers this will protect your awning and allow you to keep it open even during wind.

I built some stuff to tie down the awning on my 35 ft Windjammer, the trailer I had before I got my Montana.
Limb supports, extensions on them, ratchet straps.

Had awning tilted for water runoff.

Huge storm came out of nowhere (It was Florida), I couldn't even go outside.
Water weight on my awning broke one of the poles and ripped my awning.

I don't tie down the awning on the Montana. Close as I come are the bungee cords attached to my shade cloth and when the wind gets up we unzip the shade cloth and roll up the awning.

Old style vs New style

As mentioned earlier with the manual type of awnings you could tie down your awning

The newer styles are not meant to be tied down

If you are leaving the CG for any duration take time and roll it up

Same for us - roll it up. When I see the tops of the trees whip I pull it in. If I leave we pull it in. The way these new ones are a whipping gust can literally pop them down and right back up - hard. Mine never got broke but I don't want to try it until I find the gust that will get it.
