Air circulation

Hi All: We have a 2013 Montana 3800RE. We have a problem with air flow from between the stairs up to the bedroom. It is very chilly. The rig is winterized by Keystone at the factory.
I plan to block these vents. This area, in front of the stairs and the door, is the coldest spot in the rig and just below the thermostat.
Question. Is this air combustion air for the furnace ? Thanks for your help.

Yes, that is the return air for the furnace. We block ours off in the summer and open it up in the winter when we change our floor vents from ones that shut to the ones that don't.

Combustion air is from outside the RV and is exhausted outside. The return air for the heat exchanger is under the stairs.

I do the same as Dick blocking in warm months and not block in cold.

In other floor ducted RV's none of them have exhibited the issue where you have to cover the floor registers for supply and return air to the furnace to keep the AC working. The fact that most owners report this working seems to indicate there is large outside air leakage into the ducts or basement duct area. Does anyone know the cause of this issue and is it worth trying to insulate or fix?

Now I am confused?? In my 3582RL the heating and AC are two completely independent systems. The heating system is in the floor. And the AC system is in the ceiling no connection between the two except both are controlled by the thermostat. I did remove the wall between the basement and the main part of the RV and insulated that area. I also put filter material behind the intake vents under the stairs.

But maybe I am missing something here or just can't understand just what you guys are talking about?

I followed the suggestions made by dieselguy http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...rchTerms=vents and it solved the problem you are having Golferdave.

Is the heat duct in the floor insulated or just uninsulated sheet metal?

Lenny K, that is the mod I did also. Got the idea from dieselguy. Have done it on my last two rigs. Makes a huge difference.

It sure stopped all the drafts and as a bonus it blocked off the easy access point for rodents.

The metal duct in the living room is up against the floor and encased below that...at least on mine james. Dave, the floor in front of the door is pretty thin since the entry stairs fold up under it. The vented stair risers do let in a bunch of cold...especially if you have six point leveling where four of those leveling rams have huge holes into the underbelly and passthrough. ALSO...look between the bottom stair and the side wall of the entry closet. On mine, there was an opening about an inch wide by at least six inches tall. I crawled in behind that area from the passthrough and glued in a piece of wood to seal it up. John

If the floor duct is insulated and sealed but closing off the registers helps the AC then there must be an air leak between the furnace and the floor registers unless the air is just passing through the furnace from the furnace return. The furnace can leak outside combustion air into the floor duct if the furnace gasket is not sealing? I guess it is time to start pulling the basement wall covers and have a look see.
