extra tanks for propane generator

Hi all, Just curious, where do you store the extra propane tanks for your generator when travelling for a dry camping trips? I don't like the idea of driving around with them in the back of the TV. Is it safe to mount them in the storage compartment? I purchased four additional 40 lbs bottles for these types of trips.

For safe transport, the cylinders must be in a well vented compartment, or better yet, secured upright in the bed of the TV. When the ambient temperature increases, the tanks tend to vent due to warming and you don't want propane build up inside a closed compartment.

You also need to check the laws when transporting that many tanks. There are laws about how many and how much you can transport through tunnels and other areas. More so since 9/11.

Are your regular ones 30 or 40 lb? Mine are thirty and I was just going to upgrade them to forty lbs and carry one extra. My generator will suck down the propane if I let it run constantly. How long are you planning on dry camping?

We will be dry camping for three days, the 40 lb bottles will fit in place of the 30lbs. I did have to relocate the regulator. I have the 5500 and a 40 lb bottle will last about 14 hours with only one ac; running

Sounds about right compared yo my experiences with my 5500. I guess most of my dry camping is done in a bit cooler weather. I do know upgrading to good 6volt batteries has helped with my dry camping especially when having yo run the heater.

When i used to transport tanks for my grill, I built a wood frame to hold them in the back or my truck bed.

You should NEVER EVER transport a propane tank laying down. That is extremely dangerous. It can blow the whole bed off of your truck along with the cab.

The tanks are mounted standing up, my concern is the safety of hauling them mounted in the storage compartment.
