Steve, yes the new one is much quieter. Not as quiet as the one we put in Dave's but plenty quiet for us. I would think you could swap them. I don't know if it's a direct swap or if you'd have to drill another hole for mounting. If I was swapping fans in this one i'd go with a 120mm ball bearing computer case fan (muffin fan). They are nearly silent. With water closet door closed all we could hear was a hum and then only within a foot or so of that door.
