Seattle to Palm Springs Mar2016
We're heading to Palm Springs and would like to avoid LA on I-5. Any opinions about jumping on route 99 out of Sacramento to Bakersfield then route 58 to 395 to 215 to San Bernardino then I-10 to Palm Springs? Enjoy the Holidays.

Stay on I-5, then take either 46 or 58 across to Hwy 99, and then 58 east from Bakersfield. Hwy 99 is really not that easy to travel on compared to I-5, and it's just too bad that 58 has to take you onto Hwy 99, even for that short distance.

Either I-5 or Hwy-99 from Sacramento to Bakersfield are fine. I-5 is in pretty good shape just watch the transitions from bridge/underpass surfaces back to the asphalt roadway. There usually is a depression from the trucks about 3' past the change. Hwy-99 has a large number of onramps/offramps which are heavily used. Stay in the number #2 (of 3) lanes as much as possible to avoid the mayhem.
Definitely take Hwy-58 east in Bakersfield. But rather than going south on Hwy-395 to the madness of I-15/I-215/I-10 and San Bernardino, I prefer an alternative route. Stay on Hwy-58 (and a short stretch of I-15) to Barstow. Then take Hwy-247 through Lucerne Valley to Yucca Flats. Take Hwy-62 south (right turn in Yucca Flats) to I-10 and you come out just above Palm Springs. Good road all the way and no where near the traffic congestion.

Thanks for your advice. I'll take 46 and 58 to avoid LA.
Cheers

X2 on Duneduggybuilder route as we just came up 58 from Barstow. This is a lot more enjoyable than I-5 and the north side of LA.

I came north in the I 5 in May of this year and between Bakersfield and Sacramento was some of the worst road I have ever travelled on.
