Axels?
My back axel has lost its camber and is wearing the inside of the tires so I am trying to wait till I get home to fix it. I can have the old ones rebent then or I have been thinking about changing to 7k axels. I know someone on here did that. I just installed self ajusting brake the first of the yr so I want to reuse them. Am I wrong or will the same backing plates fit the 6k and 7k axels. I seem to remember that they will. so all I would have to buy would be the new beams and change out the parts. thanks
Bobby

That is exactly what a couple of us have done - the 6K and 7K axles tubes use the same backing plates. So your self-adjusting backing plates will work fine with your new (cambered) axles.

My experience and recommendation is; spend the dollars on a new set of 7000 lb axles. If you rebend the original axles you have no gurantee that the material will or has been weakened from stress. Also identifying where the bend/stress has occurred (spindle or axle tube) will be a concern; once metal goes beyond that yield point there is no return. Could be throwing good money after a repetitive problem and headache.

Just my opinion ... as long as you locate a competent and trusted axle shop, let them realign your axles. Lot less work on your part. I took mine to Axle Wheel & Alignment locally. $55.50 per axle. For years, they've tweeked axles all day long every day of the week. They adjusted the camber and toe ... over a year has gone by with no tread wear issues as before. Although the backing plates will bolt up ... a true #7000 brake assembly will for sure have a different and stronger magnet and possibly a different compound in the brake shoe material. The last sentence was FYI only. The original brakes stopped you before and will continue to do so.

Thanks guys I cked with my dexter dealer and a new set of 6ks are 114.00 each did not ck on the 7ks but dexter gave me a # in ga for a co to make new 7ks for 200.00 each including shipping. So atleast I know where to start. will talk to the shop at home when I get there. I may try to get the old ones rebent because by that time I am looking at having to buy a new set of tires also "OH WELL".

After sitting here thinking that we are in leeds Ut heading for Las Vegas sat AM and then east on 40 in a wk or so does anyone know of a good shop to recamber the axels close to the route. dieselguy put me to thinking if I could get them done for that price it would be worth it then I could deside what to do when I get home. 2500 miles is a long way to go without doing anything. Thanks guys

Bobby, I left God's country unguarded, as I am in Gettysburg Pa. I suggest that you keep a watch on your tire wear. If possible, wait until you arrive home and find a shop you trust and ask their opinion. Good luck Larry

Bobby, Brad Lasater (lasater) lives in the region/general area near Vegas. Why don't you email him and ask. I have not seen him on here lately, so why I said email.
Also "Firetrucker" on MOC may have a couple ideas. He lives in Nevada.

I got two new 7000# axles from Dexter last year, easy swap and mounting is the same as 5200# axles.
Now I don't have to worry about rebending old ones metal bent once will bend the second time easier.

Mark did you get the complete assy or just the beams and change out your parts. if you don't mine about what did you pay per axel? I am thinking that I am going to replace mine with new ones also. I don't trust the old ones and it will be 7k axels.
