Seward, Alaska - Meeting with Icehouse
We arrived in Seward today and joined Tammy and Bernie (Icehouse) at a local restaurant for dinner. They are a really sweet couple and lots of fun! They entertained us with tales of what it is like to live up here in the winter time -- snow piled higher than the top of the rig, periodically pushing the snow off the roof when more than a foot has accumulated, and dealing with temperatures as low as -60. It's clear that ones blood does indeed "thicken" when exposed to prolonged cold. If you have any doubt, see the attached picture where, after dinner, we are huddled in our coats while Tammy and Bernie are sweating in their short sleeved shirts (you can't tell from the picture, but Tammy is wearing flipflops on her feet!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Now that summer has officially arrived, the high temps this week in Seward are in the low 50s, with the lows in the low 40s. With the intermittant rain and a slight breeze, the temp (adjusted for wind chill) outside after our dinner together was probably in the mid to upper 40s. For us, that's cool. But as Tammy said, when you've been down below zero for long enough, then temps in the 30s seems warm, and the 40s are HOT!!!
As we said, the blood must indeed thicken when you live up here year round!!!

David, It definitely does. I remember a day in Western Alaska when we couldn't fly, temp was -30f, a cold front had come thru, the very next day it was up to 40F, a 70 degree difference overnight. It was tropical and we all flew out with just short sleeve shirts on. As you are probably aware, Fairbanks can have a 150 change from winter (-60) to summer (90). Ya gotta love it though.
I hope everyone enjoys their trip through "The Last Frontier" and has a safe return.....

Dave and Joanna - Thanks for the weather report. Burr, I'd be cold too! Bernie and Tammi - you're brave, sturdy souls!
Enjoy your Alaskan adventure. Continued safe travels .....
