New security locks
I changed out all of the locks with round type keyed locks on the cargo doors, around $13.84 (plus Tax) each, they came with Two keys each, all keyed alike.

Yeah - I've been looking for them for several months & so far can only locate the ones that are too short. Where do we locate some? Mike

I got mine at a local RV parts dealer here. Mine were all keyed alike. I will see if they have a catalog or something online. I've got it. http://www.russdeanrv.com/

We, strike that, Sue, got them at a local small, mom and pop locksmith. Any locksmith will have them, they were keyed alike. Based on my experience as a business man, the dealer probably buys the lock sets from a locksmith with a 15% discount, then sells them over the counter for a 60% mark up. Maybe someone could check at the dealership, $14.00 is the average locksmith price for a keyed alike set, (multiple sets)
We mark our HVAC parts up 70% over wholesale, most all companies in our business use 100% or more, mark up.

We thought about the locks then realized that you can dig through the compartment door with a finger nail clipper.I know that because we did it on a wrecked camper. The standard keys are just one of the things we put up with in the RV industry.. Would the consumer stand for in if all trunk keys were the same on 98% of all models of autos???

Give me a screwdriver or most anything and I will enter most any RV compartment door in seconds regardless of what type locks you have. In my opinion I could find a whole lot better use for the 14 bucks (each) spent on these locks.
Rich, you may be surprised as to how many cars have the exact same key. There are just so many ways to cut a key blank before they start duplicating. Years ago my brothers Chevy BelAir key fit our sisters Buick and vice versa. Don't kid yourself into thinking that you have the only key for your trunk and in most all cars the trunk key also fits the doors and more importantly the ignition.

Glenn, chips in the keys of newer higher end vehicles stopped easy duping of keys. Also allowed for dealerships to make BIG $$$ for ordering another set of keys for the same car. My Park Ave costs $95 to order another key that will work. They need my VIN # for GM to even complete the order.
Maybe we could have "chipped" keys for our Montana locks??? Surely Keystone dealerships would ease off on the pricing... right??? I do like that "round" lock though that Ozz shows...

Glenn.. You are correct that does happen but not like in the RV industry..My Dad had a 58 Buick and one of the employees had a almost identical 58 Buick and both keys fit..

Back in the sixties and prior GM had a small number of keys. Many cars used the same key. When one of my sisters got married we opened their 1963 Chevrolet to "decorate" it with my 1964 Le Mans key. Fit perfectly.
See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I took one of the basement locks to a local Mom & Pop locksmith, paid $7.36 per PAIR. I bought 2 sets (4 locks with 4 matching keys) for $14.72 plus .089 sales tax.
Now if I can only figure out how to keep the nail file people out.....I'm working on it.

1/4 inch boiler plate doors all the way around will do the trick. Same thing for the entrance door add bullet proof glass in all windows or 1/4 inch steel bars on all the windows and that may keep the bad guys out..You may have a little trouble pulling it though... oops...hope I did not give Ozz any ideas???

How many locks are you installing in each door? I think that installing only one lock does not secure the basement at all.
I have one lock and one latch in the both doors except the front
compartment. I can rip the door open with no problem what so ever
when there is only one key lock. I think if we want to add little more security we would have to add two key locks and this would prevent the possibility of yanking the door open with bare hands.

Jerzy, not a bad idea, but I find it a pain to even use one key. It adds security, no doubt about that.

After a career in the country's largest security company (the US Army), I spent five years managing a security company. Guarantee, any serious thief can get in our RVs in a heart beat. All the locks around will not keep them out of the main cabin door, windows or any basement door...they'll have screw drivers, wrenches, crow bars, mallets, sledge hammers, saws, drills, and anything else they think they will need. If they can't get it open, they'll go thru it. Our locks may deter them or possibly keep out some teenagers out looking for trouble, but that's about all.

Jerzy, Yes, I have those, I just meant using a key period, I am in the habit of locking the doors every time I get in the spaces, as my truck toolbox is always locked. If I leave it unlocked on a job, I may forget to lock it while getting parts, just habit. The old lock um up is just a pain. Would be nice if people would leave others stuff alone.
Take care, Ozz

The only time I locked our storage doors since we've been fulltiming was the first year we took the Montana to Mexico---the key broke off in the lock. Luckily, I was able to get it out. Nothing was locked before or since and we've never been robbed. Mostly we stay in RV parks---the world's greatest neighborhood watch!
One time I received a call at work saying that my wife and kids had an auto accident. She had taken my car to go to the beach and I had her VW. Ran out to the parking lot and jumped into the VW and took off. Was puzzled with all the gas tickets stuck under the visors and glove box. Then it dawned on me that this wasn't her VW and I just stolen someone else's! Made a quick U-turn and exchanged vehicles--the key fit both of them.
