Charlie,

Since Al and I find it necessary to shop at least once a week for perishables that cannot be frozen, so far, note the SO FAR, we have found it sufficient to refil the freezer, the frig and the fruit, bread, etc., all at the same time. Now, if we were HUGE ice users, or if like some of the others have noted, using it for wild game, fish caught, etc., then that is a totally different thing. Just another example of different life styles, different needs, different comfort zones.

Am gleaning data from the responses tho, good info!! Learning something from each post!

Sure is great knowing there is something as small as these Avanti's tho. Gonna keep that in the memory banks, oops, better keep it here at MOC, easier to find! ha ha

Check out http://www.beveragefactory.com/index.shtml. They have all kinds of small freezers and ice makers including portable. There prices also seem reasonable.

Someone asked how reliable the Avanti products are. I looked at my little refrigerator that I have in the kennel and noticed that it is an Avanti. I have had it for 26 years and it is still running.

We bought one of the Avanti 1.4 cubic foot models. That doesn't sound very big, but it almost doubled our freezer space. We keep it at the end of the kitchen counter and use it as a table. We'll probably move it to the basement when I get around to wiring an electrical outlet down there.

We are buying a 3.4 cubic foot freezer today at Hhgregg. We noted the the 1.8's were to small and the 5.0's were to large. The 3.4 is rated to hold 105 lbs of stuff. The dimensions are(rounded off) Width 25 inches, Length 33 inches, Depth 23 inches. We did no get the 2nd recliner or end table in our 3400 to make room for the bird cage and the freezer will fit nicley back there also. It will be just the right size, in volume, for when we winter. We will have some sort of a cover for it and it can double as a end table Or a stand for the Bird cage... The price, on sale with rebates is 129.97 the brand is Haier. We did look at the Avanti brand.they are very nice and very reliable and very expensive. It is difficult to find a freezer under 5.0 cubic feet.

I got the Avanti several weeks ago. Plugged it in to test it out and was suprised to find out how much heat it generates! I thought something was wrong with the unit or something! Anyway, once it got to it's set freezing temperature, it was no longer hot to the touch on the side or putting out any heat. Just a note. Steve says he found something to this effect in the archives as well about small freezers being hot until they reach the set point!
I found the Avanti to be more expensive online...around 279 with and without shipping. If you have a good applicance store (like I found in Bismarck, ND of all places) I was able to purchase the 3.2 cubic feet for 179. Best price I found!
rich, I am familiar with Haier products. We have used the small frig's in the hospital for a long time. They are very dependable as well. I looked at that model, it was just too wide for where I wanted to put it.

We have no nearby place to get the Avanti. We see that 179.00 price from Internet stores but the shipping om these small freezers is by Common Carrier (truck) and the shipping is nearly as much as the freezer. Sears had a 5.0 freezer but it was way to big..You could store a cow in there. The 3.5 was just right and local. Would have got the Avanti if we could have got one local.. BTW..both of our home freezers will run hot when getting down to temp.

Steve..txkrumm..Thanks for the endorsement of the Haier. we had seen them in many nursing homes and group homes so suspected that they were of good quality. We did buy the Haier yesterday, It is down in the pantry on a test run. It is the Model HNCM035E the actual dimensions are Width 24 -7/32 Depth 22 -19/32 height 32-19/32, It was on sale at HH Gregg for 129.95(with rebate) It will fit nicely in the rear of the 3400 in the space were a recliner would be.. Now all we need is the W/D combo and we are ready to winter.

Colleen mentioned deciding whether to get an ice maker or freezer so I thought that I would tell about the ice maker that we have. We wouldn't have bought it but the dealer gave it to us when we bought the Monty. It is a Magic Chef Counter Top Ice Maker, Model #MCIM30TS. It is supposed to make ice in 7 minutes - well, yes, maybe half a glass full. I usually make a couple of gallon-sized bags full and it takes a couple of hours. We have it in the basement and have found we have to open the doors on both sides to allow air to flow through. It is very hot here in Texas. It has been handy to have as I like a lot of ice. Not sure that I would recommend it at the $399 that are listed for.

Carol you asked what you would store in the freezer... we love to make freezer jam & applesauce. Much better flavor than store bought. When on the west coast in the summer there is a plentiful supply of blueberries around here and at a decent price. Sometimes you can even find u pick fields. We like the gravenstein apples for applesause and there is an orchard close buy where you can find rejects for half the price of store bought. They also make a wonderful apple pie. That is what I would use the extra freezer space for.

Myrna,

Now that makes a lot of sense! (I however, pretty much gave up that freezing and homemade stuff years ago when I took up research! HA HA found I like the research time much better than I enjoyed slaving over the hot stove to do the other. Enjoy eating it tho, so if you want to share, my cupboards and freezer have room in em! HA HA HA)

We go to the meat market and buy enough Steaks, Chops, Chicken, Ground meat, Hamburgers to last us a month or two and all that goes into the freezer. Right now there are several bags of strawberry's and blueberries that we picked locally in out pantry freezer also a bag of ice or two..not to mention some Ice cream so we make good use of a freezer. I have the 3.5 CF freezer that we got for the camper running down in the pantry and there is a lot of stuff in it .It is rated at holding 105 lbs of stuff...that is a lot of frozen stuff...
